  1. Submission statement: TSMC is set to stop supplying sophisticated AI processors for all of its Chinese clients from Monday, November 11, reports [Financial Times](https://www.ft.com/content/a736beeb-b38a-484e-bbe9-98e92ecb66d9), citing [Ijiwei.com](https://ijiwei.com/n/922301), which in turn cited emails sent by the foundry to its customers. This change concerns advanced process technologies (such as 7nm and below) and will have a significant impact on China-based developers of AI processors. This does not, however, mean that TSMC will cease to serve these customers completely.

The new restriction is limited to AI processors and AI GPUs made on 7nm-class and lower nodes. Smartphone processors, chips for automotive applications, and other devices that cannot be used for military or dual-use applications are not affected, the Ijiwei report stated”

  2. Taiwan knows they may be cooked now that Trump won. Gotta stop feeding the beast and really lean on that silicon shield.

Given they already have 7nm I wonder how effective this move will be

  4. Not sure it’s the best decision.
Evens could turn in an unfavorable way :

    * The peaceful way : China invests massively in its own processor industry to fully get rid of its dependency to Taiwan, in long run they become more cost effective and lead the whole market, Taiwan weakens and the leading countries have even more dependency on China
    * The aggressive way : this restriction fuels China’s motive to take over Taiwan to pursue its development in the AI industry that is a key field to master to stay afloat of the leading countries

What could have been done instead (I have 0 knowledge of the reality of this market so it’s just me bullshitting):

    * Keep selling lower grade / previous gen processors so that China is not motivated to pursue it’s own sovereignty in this field but keep depending on Taiwan
    * Keep the cutting-edge processors for allies so that they can maintain an advantage
