I’ve had this argument on this sub several times. I ways get told nothing is going to happen with us and Russia cause America.

Until Trump is in office, America doesn’t share our claim of parts of the arctic, and global warming creates the most valuable shipping channel in decades and Russia says it is ours we sit on the other side.

People really think it can’t happen to them

I’m more worried about Trudeau than Russia as far as damage goes.

Reminder to Canadians, we need to at least try to maintain our sovereignty or we will lose it.

Given the icecap shrinking, the arctic archipelago is a shipping route that will bypass the Panama canal, and allow larger more efficient ships that cannot fit in the canal to traverse from Asia to Europe.. not establishing our sovereignty in the arctic will cripple us in the next 50 years.

Okay, so this guy is saying that we need to build up our forces to defend against Russia in the arctic. What exactly are we expecting?

There’s some dispute in claims of territory. I don’t see how military size is going to change anything. I don’t see Russia trying to attack from the other side of the arctic. It’s just going to be the same crap that has been happening for the last 2 decades of exercises through foreign airspace and waters. Yelling back and forth about who owns everything. It seems like a lot of the claims are going through a diplomatic avenue anyway. Canada and Russia both claim up to each other’s economic zones.

I honestly think anyone who thinks Russia will invade Canada or start some hot naval confrontation through the arctic just doesn’t know what they’re talking about. The logistics of such an invasion would be hell. I don’t see any nation’s military being willing or capable of doing something like that. It’s just not possible.

This all seems like fear mongering, sensation and propaganda. I respect the guy for his service, but IDK if he’s just coming up with this after seeing the sensation on TV.

Defence spending needs to hit 3.5 % of GDP. It’s completely irresponsible how far we’ve let our military decay.

If russia wanted to mine or farm or dig or bottle water in the Canadian arctic, Steven Harper and/or Brian Mulroney would have offered to sell them leases a looong time ago. 

Agree. We have been neglecting the Arctic for a long time. It is obvious that we need to show our ownership and use up there. Else someone else will make use of it and say finders keepers
