The data in this visualization comes from the American Community Survey (ACS), conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The ACS is a premier source of information on demographic, social, economic, and housing characteristics across the U.S. I created this map using Tableau to highlight the percentage of the population with a graduate or professional degree by state.
If you’re interested in exploring more data like this, check out our [State Data Explorer](https://overflowdata.com/state-data/) for additional insights and comparisons across states.
Pennsylvania seems to be an outlier. You know, the inverse correlation between education and big foot spottings.
39% for DC is wild. Does this data cut out a younger age range (people who effectively cannot possibly have graduate degrees)? I mean I knew DC was chock full of lawyers, but damn.
You again with the 5 color thing. All the Top States are dark blue, but the difference among them is bigger than the difference between the minimum in the dark blue bin and 0.
odd to me that WA with seattle (arguably a bigger tech hub than Denver) has a lower percentage than CO.
I guess it can be chalked up to the fact that smaller towns in CO also have tech industries, moreso than other cities in WA. I am not sure if that is actually true.
also it seems the difference is not actually that great.
It’s ironic that DC, the “taxation without representation” district that always reminds us they should be a state but still aren’t, is at the top of the list of “states”.
Not terribly surprising.
The Orkin man who moves to Florida for warm weather from the Northeast corridor will be replaced by Raj from India with a PHD.
It seems like red states attract wealth while blue states create wealth.
It does feel like sometimes Colorado is an island
Midwest is collectively the least educated…..interesting 🙄
Why does DC seem to not understand middle america?
The color coat for this makes it a bit hard to understand. Like Washington and Illinois are hard to tell apart from Oregon or Missouri
I’ve looked this up via congressional districts. My current district in Massachusetts has a higher rate of Graduate and professional degrees than the rate of at least undergraduate degrees in the district where I grew up in Ohio.
Not surprisingly, this closely matches the 2024 election voting map.
Very liberal Massachusetts is #1 state in almost every category of success.
The election map makes literal perfect sense.
“Less then” op must be from Idaho
College degree = smarter and muh politcs right
Man, at one point, I swore in my lifetime, Iowa was the standard of education.
Quite surprised that Missouri and California would be the same in this regard.
Reminder that DC is essentially a city being compared to entire states here. It’s not a good comparison.
LMAO, Alabama is under 11% yet the largest accumulation of PhDs is in Huntsville. You remove Marshall and Redstone they have what, like 5 in the state?
Vermont surprised me on this list, but maybe with the lower population?
They only have a population of 650T, so this would indicate about 120T with advanced degrees.
Someone has a PHD in map making. There’s 5 colors on the chart, and 4 colors on the map
Can you use the same data to display something more granular like counties or census tracts? Edit: Combining MSAs would be cool to see too.
No need for a professional degree when you are the boss and those with the professional degree work for you.
Here I am pulling the average up for Ohio.
Are 1.9% intervals really deserving of distinct colors
Does this include things like degrees in “gender studies”?
That is why “East Coast Rap” is better!
And yet, someone says “less then” rather that “less THAN.”
Good grief.
Now do one with debt to income ratio.
HA! Overlay that with the map showing which states voted for Trump. NONE of the top 10. And look at how all of the lowest rated voted RED! LOL What a bunch of weak minds.
So these are all post-undergrad degrees, right?
As a friendly reminder for everyone. An education is never a stand-in for intelligence. If you can’t explain why you believe or follow an idea, you can’t actually claim it is true, as you can not even fully grasp it.
