UK millionaires are expediting plans to leave the country as fears grow that Labour may announce capital gains tax hikes and an “exit levy” for those leaving. The exodus could result in a massive budgetary deficit as the wealthy contribute a significant portion of the UK’s tax revenues.

    Oh no!

    Cruel world.
You can’t just tax the rich, you know, like the regular folk. They have newspapers crying in their name.

    What will they do?
Well, we can’t run. They can.

So all these people who claim to love their country really only care about their cash, who’d have known 😏

  4. The rich always have choices, unlike the rest of us. And the result remains the same if they leave. No-one gets “their” money either way.

Honestly though, what can be done about this? MNCs and private individuals as it stands will always be able to just jump ship to another country if it suits them, national governments are a step behind in the globalisation game.

How would their lifestyle be tangible worsened if they had to pay a bit more in taxes?

I’m not understanding what is happening with this 5 individuals, are they gonna pay taxes in the country they move to, or are they leaving their tax residence in the UK? Italy has a 0.2% tax that you pay every year on every financial security you have (over 5k, but we’re talking about millionaires here), plus a 26% capital gain tax

  8. to the rich guys moving to greece, italy and ireland: bye bye and do not forget to close the door behind you.

  9. Rich people want to live in London because it basically the best place in the world to be rich. Sorry but living in Dublin or Athens they will get so bored and just come back lol. What’s the point of being rich if you don’t get to live where you want? How many billionaires speak Italian?

    Bye 👍

We have to finally call the bluff on this shit. If they go, so be it. My guess would be reality will be different and you’ll find not much really changes long term, but I’m willing to be wrong.

We can’t keep basing tax policy on being scared of rich people.

But these countries have a higher CGT… this is just a shameless free advertisement for the lawyer lmao

Yes, but they aren’t taking their assets with them are they?
    – Unless they’re shipping rubble and debris.

There will come the day when wealth will be universally taxed. What’s already at stake here is democracy.

Tbf if I was super rich I’d rather live on a Greek or Italian island

This is the standard Tory mouthpiece headline every time Labour gets into government. Anyway if they aren’t paying taxes nobody will miss them.

  15. Traditional-Map2728 on

as much as people want to give out about this behaviour. can you blame them? i mean if i was super rich i’d do the same thing

  16. For some reason tou can take russian oligarchs’ assets, but cannot tax local millionaires. Maybe you can take their assets too.

  17. Benutzernarne on

The ones that can easily leave have already moved their wealth.

    K. It’s not like any of those countries will benefit either from having them anyway. Billionaires don’t bring prosperity and they most definitely don’t give back.

  19. Millionaires and billionaires make their money (usually) in the country they live in.

They use our infrastructure , roads, rail, company laws, etc to make a company and to move their products.

They use our labour, (needing -laws , healthcare, housing, schools, unis , pensions)

And don’t what to pay tax to support that. Fuck off.

Ireland I get but are Italy and Greece really tax havens?
