Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba dedicated an offering called ‘masakaki’ in the name of ‘Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’ to the Yasukuni Shrine in Kudan-kita, Tokyo, on 17 October in conjunction with the autumn festival that began at the shrine.According to officials, he intends to refrain from visiting the shrine until the 19th, with the focus on the response of the Ishiba cabinet ministers, who were inaugurated on 1 October.
The April and October festivals are considered important for Yasukuni Shrine.Former Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, like Prime Minister Ishiba, did not visit the shrine at the annual festivals, but dedicated a sakaki.
On 17 October, Speaker of the House of Councillors Hidehisa Otsuji and Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare Shisamaro Fukuoka also offered sakaki. The non-partisan Diet Members’ Association for Praying at Yasukuni Shrine with Everyone announced that it would postpone the simultaneous visit to the shrine in consideration of the fact that the Lower House election was underway.
Could someone explain the significance of this event?
