Those yellow trees are larches, or larix.  They’re deciduous, meaning they drop their leaves (needles) and grow new ones in the spring to withstand harsh winters, but they’re also coniferous meaning they have cones.  There aren’t many trees in the world like this, most are one of the other, deciduous usually means broad leaf.  And yet there are 25 or 30 kinds larches growing around the world on many continents.  It’s a different kind of fall color, starkly beautiful.
