I used to love CBC radio. But in an era where both radio and television are anachronisms, and the CBC is such low quality, let’s put this thing out of it’s misery.

Defunding CBC is about the dumbest thing Poilievre is campaigning on but at least it’s not one of his soundbites that he’s advertising.
As a side note… I wonder that motivations post media has to push the whole defund the CBC angle?

Defunding the CBC is a TERRIBLE idea. Firing Catherine Tait and half of the board and executive development team is an excellent idea, however. The “mothership” (as its internally called) keeps greenlighting some really stupid shows and then wearing the surprised pikachu face when they flop hard.

Just fire Tait. I like having a public broadcaster

Under Tait, prime time viewership has nearly halved and is now around 4%. Their politics coverage, long suffering from bias, effectively became the propaganda arm for a party that presently commands the support of only 1 in 5 Canadians and, if an election were held today, would likely win almost no seats outside metro Toronto and Montreal. The people they appointed to help them create their new go forward strategy were almost exclusively far left “artist” types who no doubt CBC bigwigs love to hang around with at parties, but who likely have very little idea what mainstream viewers would care to watch.
And that’s the problem with CBC in a nutshell: they decided to only try to appeal to people like themselves, and wound up appealing to almost nobody.

I really think CBC should be broken up into certain wings.
Arts and entertainment. Local news. National news.
First is still very important to the fabric of Canadians imo.
Local news in some places is the only news they have.
National news is where the taint of bias is the most pronounced, and that side should be left to fend for itself on its own dime.
hardy_83 on
Guarantee that the CPC when they come in will heavily consider at the very least, not shutting down the CBC but privatizing it. Letting corporate Canada/America continue their consumption of all sources of news.
Canadianman22 on
At minimum get the cbc out of trying to be an entertainment company. If they must survive they should strictly be a news organization with a much smaller budget than they have. Cancon rules are bullshit and need to go. We are long past the time when the government can force Canadians to watch Canadian shows.
Khancap123 on
Tait is awful and represents the cbc culture so many canadians now hate. Her entitlement is off the charts.
I believe cbc is valuable, and should be funded. But we need a better class of management and shows. Let’s dump the vast majority of the leadership of cbc and replace them with repatriated canadians with careers in global markets, primarily the us and make shows people want to watch about canadian culture etc. The BBC is better funded, but produces some great content, cbc could and should be doing the same.

$18,000,00 in bonuses for 1200 managers and executives. Yet they were cutting regular jobs to make up for a budget shortfall?!?! If you’re having a budget shortfall, maybe don’t give bonuses?

I use to be a major supporter of the CBC. Had a old school t shirt and was vocal about my support.
Not anymore. Since 2021 I have been super depressed with the quality of the news and the bias in the news they present. I still think the CBC is generally a good thing but they need a strong restructure.

There’s a good faith discussion to be had around whether the current CBC leadership needs to be replaced, and whether there are any savings to be had by making CBC more self-sufficient.
However, the narrative that the CBC needs to be defunded because it’s a propaganda mouthpiece for the Liberal government is bonkers absurd. There’s no proof of this. Plenty of stuff critical of the Liberals gets aired on CBC. Just because you didn’t see your favourite anti Trudeau story on the front page the one time you looked doesn’t mean they’re covering for him.

Like everything in government, the problem with the CBC was never the workers.. it’s the 20-layer dip of useless make-work managers that need to be cut, starting from the top.

Because your news, written and broadcast, is garbage. Sports coverage is awful, esp after losing HNIC, and the remainder of your homegrown developed shows are mediocre at best.
CBC Radio is the exception (CBC Radio 1, 2 and 3, plus Radio Canada). Quality programming, good variety, etc. When the CBC News comes on CBC radio however I change the station.
My 0.02? Keep the radio business just as it is, and defund all TV activities.

The CBC has become nearly exclusively a mouthpiece for people who want to accuse big chunks of the country of bigotry as the answer for every problem certain people have. Since I have a hard time relating to this, I’ve stopped listening or watching completely.
If media is only going to be playing the role of dividing people, let it be on private funds, not using my own money to turn a bunch of people against me.

Awesome idea CBC isn’t necessary, it has become over bloated a top heavy bureaucracy mismanaged and unresponsive to the public. People are not watching the TV service, though ratings for the radio fair a bit better. Yes it’s a great idea

My take is that there’s no political conspiracy or anything behind the CBC, it’s just a reflection of the humanities academics in Toronto and Ottawa. But these people don’t represent Canada as a whole.
So if we have a public broadcaster it must be structured in a way that no single minority can dominate. Maybe it should be a collective of small local operations, ie, no central editorial policy.
