  1. Do we really need this anymore? Is there a problem of white men being over represented in our country’s doctors? Anecdotal but I don’t even see them that often any more

This thread will get locked but

I’m in the tech industry and we’ve had a lot of “diversity initiatives” over the last years.

One thing that shocked me when I heard it was someone vouching for a candidate to get an interview after browsing resumes we received for the position by saying “he’s a white dude and went to X school, you know he got there on merit”.

I realized that was the assumption that all non Whites or Asians would have to fight against.

Post secondary institutions who practice those discriminatory DEI policies should have their accreditation suspended.

  4. I’d be a lot more concerned if I thought we had a meritocratic system to begin with. Reality is, meritocracy doesn’t really exist in the vast majority of fields. My prediction is that everything will be fine and this guy is losing his mind over nothing.

Wait that’s not how that goes…

I could really care less if my doctor is a female, male, white, black etc. Just look into my anus and tell my why it’s so damn itchy all the time!

i, for one, *don’t* want our medical system to put *anything* above technical ability.

  8. I don’t know why we don’t just remove names from applications for the purposes of sorting through candidates and attach a unique identifier to any application. Seems like it would be a lot less hassle than all of the song and dance we currently do, and once the person sits down in front of you it would be entirely based on nothing but the application and qualifications.

I think this is a nothing burger.  There’s only a limited number of residency spots open each year which all Canadian grad med students need to go through before becoming an actual doctor.

If students at this TMU school only got in because of DEI and are woefully incompetent, they will not get matched into one of these coveted residency spots.

They will end up having wasted 4 years of tuition, or at best, end up in a program that’s not their first choice and will probably not make it through anyways.

Overtime, the royal medical college (should) be noticing that nobody from the TMU program is getting residency matches and will put them on probation or shut them down

Thanks for your totally relevant opinion guy who never went to medical school or practiced medicine. I’m sure you know exactly how the ins and outs of medical school work.

lol you idiots just see the word “diversity” and throw a temper tantrum eh? All of these people will still have to actually go through medical school and pass all the tests and do all the practicums and practice for literal years before they even get a medical license. Nothing about this program is yielding unqualified doctors so what’s your REAL complaint? You don’t want non-white doctors? Who cares, Canada needs more doctors.

Jamie Sarkonak sure has been bringing the divisive heat this past year. She’s come a long way from writing about orgies at the U of A

  12. Wow props to whoever wrote the article. Glad we’re starting to be allowed to talk about this bullshit.

Why do we have to involve skin tones into this when we definitely have a shortage of medical staff.
    Simply give admission basis merit…

This is wonderful. There are a lot of stigmas in medicine and medical care for people of colour and women. Many studies are usually only conducted on men, or special healthcare concerns are looked overlooked because of race, weight and sex. There should be mandatory diversity training for all new doctors.

  15. Coriolanus556 on

I’m not personally concerned. No matter their pedigree, if my doctor has a degree from Rye High, I’m walking out the door.

  16. So not only are whites second class citizens now but theyre bringing in record numbers of people that are gonna be first class citizens over them.

“In 2025 there will be more medical school spots available for literally every student of every ethnicity and this really upsets me because the word diversity got used”

Any of you actually thought through how this doesn’t make it harder for a single person of any ethnicity (including white people) to get into medical school next year? Not a single existing medical school has changed its enrollment. The requirements to become a doctor are unchanged. Literally the only thing that will happen is a new medical school will be open that never existed before. Nothing has been made more difficult for anyone and no requirements have been reduced for anyone.

Like maybe we spend our energy worrying about something that actually might affect us in a negative way? Having more doctors isn’t really a problem for anyone.

Important point is that the acceptance rate for medical schools across Canada averages at 5%. It’s pounded into us that there’s a shortage of medical professionals, and there is, but provinces refuse to invest more to satisfy growing demand.

Such a program as TMU’s would be less egregious if this were not ridiculously competitive already. But the biggest offense across the board is political leaders implying that Canadians refuse to fill many sorts of positions, when in fact they are not permitted.

edit: also wanted to note that the acceptance rate in the US is higher, and their population growth rate is at approx 1%.

What I don’t get is that there’s no similar push to get men into traditionally female positions. Right now, only 20% of elementary and middle school teachers are male, 40 years ago that number was double at 40%. Similar story with psychologists and social workers, which have dropped by 40% and 20% respectively.

We’ve done a pretty good job of bridging the gender gap in male professions, but at the same time care jobs like these have less and less men going into them every year. I’d argue this is actually MORE important since gender doesn’t impact how good of an engineer you are, but it does impact how good you are at relating to a boy who lacks a male role model at home, or a man in crisis who is more likely to be violent towards women

For anyone reading this, there are essentially no academic requirements for the TMU faculty of medicine. There’s no MCAT and GPA isn’t even considered in the selection process. It’s all quota and DEI based. All of it. I worry for the safety of the layperson (someone not in the medical field themselves) who doesn’t know things like this. It’s honestly dangerous to have doctors getting in with no academic requirements whatsoever.

If it’s okay for an Indian-Canadian to want an Indian family doctor, then why is it considered racist for a White Canadian to want a White doctor?
