This series of maps is very interesting. I learned that the county that is 10-15 minutes west of my hometown has 1% or less black population. My hometown has a 70% black population. Such a drastic difference in such a short distance.

Will we get an animation of these once you’re done?

Much less racist than the %1 map lol

Only the most and the least populated counties in the Birmingham MSA are at 20% or more (MSA is seven counties). Makes sense as Bibb is more adjacent to the Black Belt

I can’t wait until my home county is still there when you get to 50%. The only competition we would be finalists in.

This series of maps is genuinely so interesting I’ve been checking this sub every day for the new drop lmao

Judging by overrepresentation in the media, entertainment and advertising, you’d think it was at least 50% everywhere in the country.

Wonder why there are so many black people in that one county in northwest PA.

Damn, I would have thought they were 50%, based on what I see in TV commercials.

Is it the case that there’s not a single 20% Black county west of the 100th meridian?
It’s kind of hard to tell, because the black dots for the cities are easily confused with the gray fill color, but it looks that way.
(Why the 100th meridian? It’s roughly the point where rainfall really drops off; if you look at a physical/satellite map of the US, it goes from eastern green to western brown in a roughly straight line from North Dakota to Texas. Similarly, if you look at a map of population density, there’s a sharp drop-off in that same area; notice the major cities like Austin, OKC, and Wichita all lined up around 97°W, and then not a whole lot until you get close to the Pacific. There certainly wouldn’t have been much slavery-powered agriculture west of that line, given that California was settled fairly late by USAmericans and was always a free state.)

What’s with the city labeling?

I hope they vote. It’s amazing how many people don’t vote (not just Black voters, all voters).

What happens if we overlap this map with a map of violent crime?
