    >*Canada’s foreign affairs minister says she didn’t know that foreign interference was taking place in Canada until she learned about it through a media report, the commission of inquiry heard Thursday.*

    >*Mélanie Joly said that while the federal government had been watching for interference in Canadian politics by other countries and has documented six cases, she only learned of it in May 2023 when it was reported that Conservative MP Michael Chong had been targeted by the Chinese government.*

    >*Although Joly had been appointed foreign affairs minister in October 2021, she said information about foreign interference hadn’t been part of the briefing material that she received from the department.*

    >*She said she also did not recall a memorandum to cabinet in May 2022 that outlined the need to take steps to counter hostile actions by state actors, adding that it came early in Russia’s war with Ukraine.*

    >*Joly said her briefing packages now contain a section on foreign interference. She said she receives twice-monthly briefings on foreign interference and briefings prior to some foreign trips. A member of her staff is now charged with monitoring information on foreign interference, she said.*

How siloed are the people in Trudeau’s cabinet? The foreign affairs minister should be potentially a powerful cabinet position. If this were the U.S. would the Secretary of State be so kept in the dark? Nope.

  3. Join the list of lies.Whay a idiotic government can’t believe the stupidity.

  4. So is she just lying or have the unelected bureaucrats seized this much power and who is giving them the orders ?

Ugh, just no, it’s either incompetence or being complicit in trying to cover it up.

So, there are two options. 1. It is true, and that is insane. 2. She is lying, and that is insane.

  7. You don’t know what you don’t know, all cabinet positions have their set modus operandi that most Ministers come into, blah blah blah…

…but honestly it’s astonishing that this isn’t a key component of foreign affairs at this stage. The moment it became clear years ago that foreign intelligence were trying to affect democratic processes of our allies we should have *immediately* questioned our own. Russian interference was reported in US interactions during their 2016 election. Being asleep at the wheel isn’t acceptable for most people in a completely inconsequential position at a menial job, how the hell is that possible at levels like this? This — and so many countless other failures of this government and frankly others before it — highlights a need for constant iterating and accountability at these stages. We’ve bloated government size to unprecedented levels so it stands to reason there should seemingly be positions that are also facing expanded issues in addition to larger of the same service offerings.
