Another US backed coup, this is like the 50th this century.
As if the Lebanese people will follow through.
The moment they realize the us is behind it they will promot the Hezbollah again.
The us needs to get it’s brain checked.
So this is the compromise Biden made to Israel?
“Let Iran keep their nukes. We’ll overthrow the Lebanese government instead”
Its a beginning💙
The beginning of the Civil war
US citizen here. The USA has no business ‘installing’ any leader. It is not their place and I hope this is not happening.
Edit: noting all the downvotes:
That really worked out well when the US did this to IRAN. We have the IRAN we have today because of the USA’s interference. We can certainly aid but we should not be choosing for other people what their country’s government is. This is something they must do themselves.
No!!! The USA needs to stop playing the role of “King Maker” it doesn’t work and it’s never worked. STOP DOING IT!
This would be really dumb, it’ll cause huge unrest between the different sects
This can’t possibly go wrong.
> Saudi officials told the Journal that the kingdom backs the idea
Hardly surprising.
“seeking to install new Lebanese president”
Ah yes nothing says we are the good guys more than *installing* a president in a foreign country.
It’s not like the international community has been calling out Iran for messing with Lebanon’s internal politics and disrespecting it’s people’s right to self determination for a few decades now or anything …
While I don’t disagree, in principle, isn’t that “election interference” ?
Can’t wait to hear which fascist autocrat the CIA Can find to rule Lebanon.
Oh my god I thought we learned from this twenty years ago.. unfortunately you can’t force democracy on people, and certainly can’t make regions just act a certain way.
Even worse is that the government contingents that do have influence either are very anti American or gunho on regional conflict. Unless the ME gets watershedded, this will be constant for our lifetimes
I really really hate Hezbollah and want to see it wiped out.
The USA installing a government in Lebanon… That seems very counterintuitive. Both towards the goal of destroying Hezbollah, and towards Lebanon as a whole. The Lebanese people deserve better lives.
either a Lebanese President or a Hezbollah one. now pick.
I hope this is a step in the right direction for the Lebanese people, and I hope for a peaceful and prosperous future for them
Thank God Saudi Arabia kidnapped their ally Saad Hariri for *checks notes* absolutely no logical reason and destroyed all credible opposition to Hizbollah.
I think the US should stay out of other countries elections.
Right. Because installing puppets in the Middle East has never once backfired on the United States. /s
To be fair, Lebanon doesn’t even have a President for more than 2 years now, Hezbollah and its allies are voting No on the candidates to get two-thirds majority in Parliament.
And the President really doesn’t have much power, he’s just a figure head.
The power comes from Prime Minister and there was a lot of protests and disputes when that happened in 2021
What’s the over /under on this going drastically wrong?
Ppl really gotta read past headlines, the US is in talks w Saudi, Qatar and Egypt over this it’s not unilateral
Pretty sure lebanon is excited and so happy to let America tell them how to run their country!!!
Don’t you dare meddle in our elections, though!
Oh, we’re seeking to? What boots on the ground are we providing to assist with this?
US is on the verge of not even selling weapons to Israel (not donating…selling!) and kept pushing for a 21 day re-armament period for Hezbollah.
Israel is doing all the work, despite us hindering them at every turn, then our country thinks it gets to call the shots in the aftermath.
I agree removing Hezbollah and getting a new president of Lebanon would be ideal. I’m just put off by the sheer chutzpah…
> Terrorists cause problems in the Middle East, kill innocents, and take over local governments
“UNITED STATES WHY ARENT YOU STOPPING THIS!”
> United States tries to overthrow the terrorist regime
“THE US SHOULD STOP MEDDLING IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS! COLONIALISTS!”
Never fails. Literally every single time.
To be fair though, we don’t have the greatest track record, so I can’t exactly blame people for being skeptical. But it does get tiring to have this exact cycle happen constantly. If we don’t get involved, we are a horrible nation turning a blind eye to the plight of others. When we do get involved, we are imperialist genociders. Like. Come on people.
And, realistically, a lot of that now is stoked by foreign adversaries trying to sew division via social media, but still. What do you want us to do? When we send aid to the countries controlled by terrorists, the terrorists take all the aid. If we do nothing, innocent people die. If we overthrow the terrorists, the country is going to need time and investment to rebuild as a democratic nation. It’s not like you can overthrow a totalitarian regime then just leave and expect it to work out.
I’m here for that. I heard Iran are also looking for a new leader 👀
