> its legitimacy as an official language minority community is all too often questioned
Does a white person living in Harlem deserve support as a racial minority? Or is it disingenuous to portray them as a minority when they actually belong to the country’s super majority?
Just because there is one place in Canada where Anglos are a minority doesn’t mean we have to break our backs helping them become a majority like everywhere else.
Anglos seem to easily forget that French speakers make up 20% of the country. Who’s a minority?
> 70% of Anglos Quebecers are bilingual
You’d be hard pressed to find a single French Canadian outside Quebec that doesn’t speak English as well. But in Quebec, conditions are *so good* for anglophones, 30% never had to bother learning French!
[removed]
I always find it ridiculous that anglophones are considered a minority in Quebec since they make up the majority of the country. English **is** the dominant language of the country and the continent. It’s hypocritical to put French canadians outside Quebec and anglo-quebecers in the same basket. Anglo Quebecers dont need help to maintain the vitality of their language.
>For several years now, the English-speaking minority in Quebec has been facing challenges that are threatening its vitality
That is just not true. English proficiency is sky rocketing in Quebec, especially among the younger generation. English vitality is nowhere near endangerement. English communities are booming, especially in the greater montreal and gatineau. Contrary to french, english in Quebec is not in decline. It is exponentially growing.
>The most recent Census data from 2021 tell us that 71% of Quebecers with English as a mother tongue are bilingual
First, that’s not great at all. According to these stats, 29% of anglophones do not speak french in 2021 (it’s probably worst in 2024). 1/3 anglophone did not integrate into Quebec’s society. Definetely not something to flaunt as being positive. Anglos not knowing french and not caring for quebec culture is not just a myth, it’s a reality for quite a sizable chunk of the community.
Second, I’m not sure where exactly he gets this stats of 71%. I cant find it in the [2021 census](https://www12.statcan.gc.ca/census-recensement/2021/dp-pd/prof/details/page.cfm?Lang=E&SearchText=Quebec&DGUIDlist=2021A000224&GENDERlist=1,2,3&STATISTIClist=1,4&HEADERlist=0). 445k quebecers speak only english. There is 1.08 M quebecers with english as first language and 639k quebecers with english as a mother tongue. Maybe someone can help me here.
