SS: Toru Takahashi writing for Nikkei Asia says India’s “neighborhood-first” policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, designed to counter China’s growing influence in South Asia, is unraveling due to diplomatic missteps and increasing resentment among its neighbors. Takahashi highlights Sri Lanka’s political shift with the election of antiestablishment leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake as a symbol of uncertainty for India’s regional aspirations, especially with anti-Indian sentiment still strong. Meanwhile, countries like the Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar, and Afghanistan have increasingly aligned with China or other adversarial powers, leaving India isolated. Takahashi argues that India’s failure to balance its diplomatic engagements, compounded by perceptions of arrogance and limited resources compared to China, has contributed to its dwindling regional influence. Despite India’s efforts to expand its global reach through the Global South initiative and cooperation with ASEAN, Takahashi notes that its diminishing leverage and internal challenges have led experts to question the effectiveness of Modi’s foreign policy.

Additional context: Things seem to have turned around in the Maldives, where President Mohamed Muizzu, after his recent visit to New Delhi, agreed to allow India to deploy “[defence platforms and assets](https://np.reddit.com/r/GeopoliticsIndia/comments/1fywula/muizzu_agrees_to_let_india_deploy_defence/)” after securing substantive financial assistance. Furthermore, in my view, India’s post-independence foreign policy toward its immediate neighbourhood, and even in Southeast Asia, has long been perceived as arrogant. It’s a perception that remains unchanged.

I am not sure how the esteemed writers of Nikkei reached that conclusion. India recently bailed out Maldives by signing 300+ million currency swap agreement, they are developing a sewage project for 110 million, muizzu on his recent state visit has called india, Maldives dearest friend and has allowed Indian military deployment in the country.

Sri Lanka has also swivelled toward india after receiving a bailout. Jaishankar met with Dissanayake recently and has affirmed india’s support for Sri Lanka economic recovery. Sri Lanka has also banned chinese spy vessel from docking and has given operating rights of strategic humbantota airport to india Russia consortium.

Nepal has also mellowed out in recent times. They have retreated from belt and road, signed hydropower treaty with India, even oli has softened his approach towards india.
I don’t think anything needs to said about Bhutan india relations. Bhutan has given modi their highest civilian honour. India has continuosly provided financial support to Bhutan.

Now, all that’s left are pakistan and Bangladesh. Let’s leave pakistan for obvious reasons.
Blame of recent souring of Bangladesh and India relations goes totally to Bangladesh . Yunus has failed to contain islamic radicalism in his country. Videos of Hindu temples been vandalised, idols been broken, houses of Hindus been burned has enraged not just the government but the Indian public. Support for Bangladesh is eroding in indian public which makes it difficult for bjp to actively engage with them even if they ignore such incidents as it can hurt them in domestic politics. The ball is in Bangladesh lap now. If they manage to subdue this radicalism, then they can countinue to have good relations with india.

Overall, this article seems like a reaction to insta rejecting asian nato proposal.

India just looks after itself. It’s why India ignores the oppression of the Ukrainians and happily buys from Russia at low prices.
