  1. Just dropped to my knees is Lidl. How could they do this to us, how will we recover?!

We have a lot of experience in adapting to various alkohol taxes. I am sure we will be just fine.

They Are very careful about not messing up trade with the EU and the US too much.

This is a calculated and pre-signaled deescalatory but face-saving measure by China. Brandy exports from the EU to China do not compare at all to EV exports from China to the EU. Neither in value, nor in importance.

“France accounted for 99 percent of brandy imports to China last year, with French brandy shipments reaching $1.7 billion.”

Whoever wants Europe to start a trade war with China: ”good, very good.”

I feel as the probably rich Chinese people who import alcohol from Europe aren’t really going to feel the tax that much.

Thing is, most exports to China are luxury items or branded goods that are desired by the population, so they will be more than willing to pay more for exclusivity. This is not going to hurt the Cognac industry.

  9. And when exactly is our cowardice EU Commission striking back with a tariff on noodles?

  10. Predictable move. China can easily live without European cognac and wine. But can Europe live without the Chinese manufacturing? Europe need to wake up, the sooner the better.

  11. It’s a tax that mostly hits France, who was a major initiator of the EV tariffs against China. It’s a political move to hit back, probably would have seen a different product taxed if Germany would have initiated it.

It would have been eventually a loss anyway because of unfair China car’s development at a lower price because of China government incentives on premium materials… and they have the courage to call EU tariff on their cars a breach of global trade rules… 🤦‍♂️🙃

Make a note. Check out the UAE’s brandy import numbers next year.

  14. If China is gonna go tit for tat then the EU should tat then harder continue to have the tit for tat until China surrenders. The EU needs to show power on the world stage

This is especially targeted to France it seems.

The losses in the stock market must be in the billions. Lets see where this goes.

  16. I’m amazed at the arrogance on display here. We should hope China doesn’t go further, as they control the supply chains for pretty much half of the elements in the periodic table. There are metals that are absolutely crucial for for example western armies, that we completely rely on China for.

  17. The amount of clueless people who understand nothing about econ besides what their “intuition” tells them is right or wrong, joking about a trade war in this thread is sad as fuck

  18. To save Europe, we must drink double the alcohol. Its for the greater good, goddamn it
