Global research Co-authorship in economics based on publications in the top 300 journals listed on Ideas. Red dots represent countries centroids, with the size proportional to the number of authors affiliated with that country at the time of publication. Countries are determined by the institution where the author was located during the publication period.

  2. Not exactly beautiful. IMHO.

By just clicking on the link I could see that half of these journals having “American” in the title. There are only few that cover other regions, and not even sure they even look into works written in any language other than English, hence calling it “Global” is a stretch as some regions are obviously underrepresented. Hard to believe that China has a smaller red dot than the UK one (although not claiming it’s not true). It just seems like a very biased depiction.

Also, the dots overlap, making it hard to see which country it actually belongs too.

I think, as most of the journals are American, It would make sense to show all these connections only from a US perspective, and you don’t even need a map for that. Just a bar plot would be sufficient, as it’s easier to compare heights of the bars, rather than radiuses of the red dots.
