The irony is she was almost definitely met with more studio interference than he was. Hers was failure by committee

If someone fails trying to make something interesting and different, you’ll be a lot more forgiven than making a big stinking turd of a studio movie.

There’s plenty of terrible famous male directors out there making boring repeated trash.

    >A tale of two directors: Director A helmed a comic book movie for a massive studio earning a “B” grade CinemaScore, a 62% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and an 82% from audiences. Director B also directed a comic book movie for a massive studio, became the first ever to earn a “D” grade CinemaScore, nabbed a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and a 31% from audiences. The former brought in $46 million during its opening weekend while the latter, only $37.8 million. **Completely ignoring any creative prowess, artistic vision, or filmmaking craft** — the numbers are heartily in favor of Director A.

Why would you ignore that when comparing two directors? Phillips has a much longer history of movies that people generally like and DaCosta is newer and known to fewer people. People will be more willing to shrug something off from someone with a proven record than someone who is lesser known. It really doesn’t have to be deeper than that.

I mean, WB is clearly throwing Phillips under the bus (not underserved) while discerning commentators were able to see a Disney stitch-up a mile off.

And who is giving Phillips “preferential treatment”?

This article is complete crap and its sources are truly laughable.

  5. Who is giving Todd Phillips sympathy? This movie is a catastrophic embarrassment.

Sympathy? Where tf are you seeing that? Definitely not on reddit.

Who’s giving Todd Phillips sympathy? Drop by any of the comic book or related movie threads, they’re mercilessly ripping him apart for Joker 2.

  8. I do not sympathize with Phillips. He wrote, produced & directed & ok’d the final cut. He wrecked the fuck outta that movie.

Wasn’t The Marvels only her second real film? I’m not seeing anyone giving Philips sympathy but he has had so many successful films that buys you some slack

who the fuck is defending Phillips?

Also, it’s sad that Slashfilm has become a cesspool for edgelord commentary. How the mighty have fallen. Lower than Collider actually.

  11. jfc where have you seen any sympathy for Joker 2, he and his movie are being pissed on all over the internet

If this was a standalone movie with no IP attached, he would get sympathy from me. I don’t necessarily agree with the vitriol for this one beyond it being a moneygrab they couldn’t convert so they went with a goober ass narrative and did a whole bunch of weird shit… But like i said if this was just called “Fleck” or something no batman no sequel i think people aren’t saying a damn thing about it beyond “why is lady gaga singing like a normal person?” And then they’d just say aww well get em next time todd! Feels like people wanna murder everyone involved with this thing like it’s kkk propaganda or something.

    Alternate title:

We are gunna gaslight you because it fits our narrative that people on the internet hate women and make excuses for men.
Even though reality is the opposite and the internet is putting the director on more blast than I ever say the Marvel’s get.

No one is giving Tom Philips sympathy.

Also the first one was just OK and if Joaquin didn’t try really hard it would’ve been forgotten about. I mean King of Comedy happened…..we have it..so did Taxi Driver…we didn’t need another one of either….

I would argue actually Marvels got a bit more sympathy, I read many comments from people who unironically enjoyed the movie.

I haven’t ready any positive comment about Joker 2. Everyone agrees it was unnecessary af

All I’ve seen is him getting the blame!? Wtf are they talking about!? Trying to cause arguments as fucking always!
