Answering your question, yes, prisoners work while they are in prison. Jobs include things like sewing, constructing furniture, pretty much any unqualified labour. Pay is awful, refusal to work will get you into big trouble, work conditions are also concerning from human rights perspective

That incident surprised me. I thought it was forbidden to use political prisoners for community service because the ability to get out of the cell and touch some grass is seen as an indulgence. Even if it wasn’t forced, I think people would rarely refuse that sort of opportunity. Guess it’s different outside Minsk, huh.
