  2. Only tangential, but I recently read that Finnish as a language did not have a written form as late as the 13th century. It was a largely pre-literate society until then. It was mind-blowing to me as we tend to think writing as the ultimate form of accumulating knowledge and retaining it, and they had gone this far through oral traditions pretty much.
