A groundbreaking way to heat homes and businesses more efficiently using underground reservoirs is being explored by the Government after a landmark study has found it could save up to 40 per cent on heating bills.

The Labour government, which has seen the study, is understood to believe the technology can be a “valuable contributor” to its plans to give the UK “cheaper, cleaner heating” – suggesting it may become widespread in the coming years, especially in larger apartment buildings, office complexes and new-build housing estates.

“The potential for this technology is huge. Our analysis suggests it could make a major contribution to the UK’s heating and cooling demands” said Professor Matt Jackson, at Imperial College London, who led the study.

The UK has struggled for many years to decarbonise household heating. Governments have wavered between hydrogen and heat pumps, so other technologies could offer a way forwards.
