    > False claims about the federal response to the historic devastation left by Hurricane Helene are spreading out of control on social media, hampering recovery efforts in hard-hit areas, according to local officials.

    > The flood of misinformation targeting the Biden administration’s response to the destructive storm is an ominous sign for the coming election, with the presidential contest between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris sure to trigger further attacks on the truth.

    > “If you think the lies and distortions and know-nothing takes about FEMA are bad, just wait until this time next month,” Tim Alberta, The Atlantic staff writer and author, wrote on X, one of the primary platforms where falsehoods have spread faster than facts.

  2. The only way to stop these insidious lies is to crush Trump and his MAGA party in November. Kamala Harris must win a decisive election to stop them.

Go vote in November and vote straight Blue!

There is no soft paywall on this article, but I can’t report it because I posted it. LOL

Oh wow. That’s crazy. I thought this was totally going to be a normal election and Trump wasn’t going to try and burn the country down for his own ego. /s

I don’t know what the republican endgame is, complete control, sure, but there is no way a country as large and complex as ours can sustain a truly dishonest leadership. We’re so far beyond usual politician lies and untruths into cloud cuckoo land with these people and you literally cannot run a superpower on imaginary grievances dictated by a mad ruler. Fuck you can’t run a tin pot duchy like that for very long.

Check this guys…I saw my step dad today at the apple orchard and he was repeating some right wing talking point. I knew it was fake as soon as he said it. It was about the FEMA director being knocked out (she’s a woman). It’s fucking insidious what these billionaires are doing to our country and our people.

    > False claims

persist and amplify in the media that fails to call them out.

When things really start going to hell, the press will be complicit in the mess.

Do your part. Not only by voting, but at least once a day make sure to tell one MAGA moron that it’s an idiot. These fools wont go away on their own. They need to be shamed and belittled until they learn the smarter people have had enough of their stupidity.

This is truly vile behaviour from Trump and GOP and that’s saying a lot. They are knowing and willingly lying so that people reject FEMA aid or believe that the US govt is actively withholding aid from people in need. And all to score whatever political points they can.

    Sickening.

  11. Does this mean then that DeSantis made the storm hit NC?… whatta JERK!! “Please let the storm hit someone else and not me…” is that really a valid prayer? To wish bad things on other people so you can be safe? Wow… pretty self-centered.

  12. Everyone is jacked into social media getting their heads washed with misinformation, lies and straight up propaganda.

With the elimination of the fairness doctrine traditional media just propels the misinformation and saturates the landscape in a thick blanket of lies for profit.

    Welcome to the machine.

More so than the numerous other lies that come out of Trump’s mouth?

  14. It’s not going to persuade any of the voters that hate Trump from voting against Trump. It will only add to the “horrible life” those that support Trump have mind set for themselves. They live in a fictitious world, filled with Trumps lies and GOP brainwash. Not reality.

Ignoring false claims is a mistake that’s what happened in Virginia when the end of the last governor’s race became all about parental rights based in part on stories of classrooms with litter boxes.

Send Mayor Pete out ASAP to NC & Appalachia to talk to people and all local media. Get him to speak with seniors, young families & teens about the response. Have staffers record the moments to post on White House site and go viral. It’s boots on the ground real time that matter. Friendly face to face matters. Don’t tell the GOP ahead of time.

“We have a lot of crises in the U.S., but few are as significant as the information crisis. People are lying to us to make us hate each other, to get our money, to boost some cause or another.”

    Says it all.

Deadliest hurricane since Katrina and a major political party has become dedicated to misinformation about it as a talking point in the hope it will harm their opponent.

We don’t deserve to survive what happens when Donald wins again.

The sources of these claims need to be identified and tracked for repetitive behavior like this. Civil lawsuits might be an option, if actual crimes aren’t committed.

  20. How do you get away with lying about a monster storm that hit half a dozen States with enormous damages? Maybe you could claim a tornado hitting a very small area was a hoax or change the facts, but not something that millions of people witnessed in some form. Even if it totally missed you, the sky would be very dark in the distance or you would know people affected. You don’t even have to take NOAA’s word for it. It was reported on Canadian and EU news outlets, so the whole world would have to be in on the coverup. When you can get so many people to believe lies that are so easily debunked, then we’re all fucked.

I think though it’s generally a good sign that the state governments aren’t really going along with the false claims it as far as I can see. Like so far the NC Gov, and GA Gov have been denying Trump’s lies and corroborating with Biden. Hopefully they’ve realized that stability’s overall better for the country than a partisan patsy.

Saw this elsewhere and so true!

So, when disasters hit blue states it’s “God sending a message to gays and liberals, but when disasters hit red states it’s “Democrats control the weather”?

  23. Society was lucky when online weirdos were just using AI for porn. Now it’s gonna be a complete shit show now that these people have targets.

Twitter is such a cesspool of misinformation …it’s dangerous and frightening. And there are plenty of people who just read this nonsense and don’t bother to do seconds worth of research to verify its validity.
