Abstract of the study: The objective of this article is to estimate the relationship between working from home (WFH) and the subjective well-being of Chilean workers. In particular, the relationship between WFH and life satisfaction, job satisfaction and mental health problems is evaluated. The results show that women who work from home are more satisfied with their lives. Additionally, both men and women are more satisfied with their jobs. A positive relationship is found between working from home and mental health problems in the case of men. When we explore the existence of other heterogeneous results, it can be seen that for those who have children aged between 6 and 17 years, there is a positive relationship between WFH and job satisfaction. The same thing can be seen in homes where there is no overcrowding, and also among married people. For married women, a negative relationship is observed between working from home and mental health problems; however, this relationship is positive for single women.

Citing from the study: The results reveal a positive relationship between WFH and job satisfaction for those workers without children, those with children aged between six and 17 years, and those in homes without overcrowding problems. There is also a positive and statistically significant relationship (at the 1% level) for those workers who are married. On the other hand, in terms of mental health, the existence of a deterioration for single people is confirmed. It is interesting to note that in those homes with overcrowding problems, there is a negative association with the presence of mental problems. This may be due to the greater opportunity for social interaction that exists within these homes, thus reducing the loneliness problems that confinement policies brought with them. In the case of men, the existence of a positive relationship between WFH and job satisfaction is recognized for those workers who have children aged between six and 17 years, and for those who live in homes without overcrowding. Again, it is interesting to note that in homes where there is no overcrowding, men exhibit greater mental health problems. Feelings of loneliness may be the driver that explains this phenomenon (Lepinteur et al., 2022). Finally, in the case of women, there is a positive relationship between WFH and job satisfaction for those who have children aged between six and 17 years, for those who are married and for those who do not have overcrowding problems at home. On the other hand, there is an improvement in terms of mental health for those workers who are married and a deterioration for single workers, which may be indicative that life as a couple allows one to combat feelings of loneliness. In this case, no differences are seen in terms of the overcrowding situation of the home.
