Seems inevitable given the dramas of the last few years that Lineker and the BBC will part ways sooner rather than later
He’s good at his job, but no one is worth that much. It’s simply obscene that an organization that takes people to court for not paying an exorbitant license fee is flushing money away on unnecessarily high salaries.
The public pays for the BBC and one thing it could do in return would be to give opportunities to kids who would otherwise never get a look in at a TV job. They won’t be as polished as the likes of Lineker, but why should they have to be. It’s a publicly funded broadcaster. Someone as experienced and talented as Lineker can get a job elsewhere.
I’ve got no issue with Lineker‘s presenting or his politics.
But not one single person tunes in to MOTD to watch the man present or to experience the witty repartee between him and fence creosoting enthusiast Alan Shearer. The BBC could literally retrieve out of retirement Roy Hattersley’s body double the Rt Hon Tub of Lard MP to host the programme and it wouldn’t affect the ratings one iota, but would help with costs.
Why is he being paid so much? People will watch MOTD regardless of who is presenting the show.
Jermaine Jenas was being positioned for the gig wasn’t he? With him gone who’s the most likely to be willing to work live till nearly midnight on Saturday night?
The BBC personnel are not Gods and should be treated as so, it’s funding model will have to drastically change in the next ten years as a generation is growing up in a non linear online culture.
He’s decent at his job and all that I don’t dislike him for political reasons (I have other niche reasons to hate him) there’s no way we should be paying him that much for that job
Time for him to go and ave us a small fortune on a waste of time commitments in games that have already happened,
The MOTD they did once without pundits or commentary was the best. Just crowd noise.
Less Gary Lineker is an objectively good thing in all circumstances.
Anyone with half a brain can host MoTD, the football does the talking, the pundits are there for filler in between that no one really gives a shit about as it’s purely opinion and usually bollocks.
How would you sleep at night knowing you’re getting paid from single mothers getting threatening letters…..
Reckon Gaz’ll be alright lads his crisp money alone could probably buy the BBC and still have enough left over for a freddo these days
That woke lefty, champagne socialist, Bentley driving eco warrior, nimby virtual signalling prick is the reason I cancelled my tv licence.
There’s a discussion going on here https://www.reddit.com/r/AskUK/s/xkejkkJceV
Which seems really relevant. TLDR. He isn’t paid that much.
Des Lynam was 56 whrn th3 BBC binned him for Gary Lineker in 1999.
Lineker is now 63. Probably right to pension him off.
The weird level of hatred Lineker gets is one of the best examples there is of the power the likes of the Daily Mail and Rupert Murdoch still have over the country’s psyche
I feel bad for feeling this way, but I can’t help but feel glad he’s going to have a bit of a bump back to reality. He’s incredibly arrogant with the things he says and judgements he makes. He’ll never be skint, granted. But it may make him realise he’s not invincible.
