Honestly, it makes sense that renters lean toward Harris her plans actually address the housing crisis directly, while Trump’s approach seems more vague and focused on suburbs. Renters need clear solutions, not just talk.
Still waiting for Bloomberg backed London Breed to sign the Realpage ban in San Francisco that’s been waiting for her signature for like a month now. I get that she doesn’t want to give Peskin a win in the mayoral race but he’s polling in the single digits.
Trump is literally a real estate mogul who, at one point, was illegally discriminating against renting to minorities.
Why in hell would he be better at housing? His literal business is about screwing the little guy to make sure the rich get richer.

Because, let’s be clear here, Trump and Vance don’t give a damn about renters.
Trump is obviously not going to lift a finger to help people with housing, that’s a given and he shouldn’t even be in the conversation.
But I’m honestly disappointed that Harris and Walz are basically saying the only way out of housing crisis is more Reagan style supply side economics (here come the downvotes). Americans have decades that show that this does not work for something so essential as putting your roof over your head, especially when there is rampant crony capitalism involved.
Americans need mass regulations for housing, for example:
– elimination of junk fees and forced services that you can’t opt out of like trash valet services and mail delivery services in rental properties
– elimination of collusion and anti trust violations amongst landlords and developers
– eliminating “build to rent” single family home communities
– severely limiting corporate ownership of housing, for both foreign and domestic companies so that citizens can own more of the supply rather than holdings companies
These seem like no brainer regulations, and they are barely even on the radar. But of course it impacts Wall Street profits so thus the corporate owned media will use its propaganda machine to convince people that all regulations are bad.
Trump hates renters. He thinks they are poor for not being able to buy houses.
Trump and Vance give off the vibe that they would buy my apartment complex and raise rent by 80% while firing most of the maintenance team, landscapers, and never fix the pool or gate.
As someone who is voting Harris/Walz, but also works in mortgage, I’m extremely curious how this whole $25k first-time homebuyer thing will work, & also how the 3 million new units will work. Very little has been laid out in terms of specifics.
This industry is packed to the gills with crafty people without cumbersome morals & a huge appetite for money. I don’t want to see this go the way of California’s homelessness efforts, with billions of dollars flushed 1) into connected pockets 2) down the drain.
Since this appears to be one of her primary policy promises, it would be nice to open the conversation about the nuts & bolts of how this actually happens in a way that it isn’t abused.
This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://fortune.com/2024/10/02/renters-harris-trump-housing-survey/) reduced by 84%. (I’m a bot)
*****
> Close to half of renters think Vice President Kamala Harris would be better for making housing more affordable and almost a third think former President Donald Trump would be better, according to a Redfin-commissioned survey.
> He found homeowners are twice as likely to identify themselves as strongly Republican than renters, and renters far more often identify themselves as strongly Democrat.
> Half of all renter households were considered cost-burdened in 2022, totalling 22.4 million renters, the highest on record, a report from Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies recently found.

Adding people through immigration can only act to increase rent and mortgage prices when they enter those markets. I’m sure that landlords would be happy with it because any kind of price fixing won’t work.
Supply and demand is such a simple concept.
We need nationwide rent control. This price fixing software is killing us.
Most renters would vote for the candidates who are more like their friendly neighbors, instead of the candidates who remind them of their scummy landlord.
Weird how people are convinced by an actual plan and not just ‘we”ll sell government land!’
Obviously. The rambling moron thinks the answer is to deport 15% of our construction workers.
Not so sure giving people 25k for a down payment is smart. I think a civilian version of the VA backed home loan might be a better approach.
She might not do much, but I’ll take not much over not a goddamn thing which is what you’d get with trump
Some folks seem to think Harris’s plan is just to provide a subsidy for first time homebuyers. It’s more than that.
There is also a supply side component, as well as a regulatory component to address the issue with corporate landlords.
Here’s a copy of Harris’s plans on housing, from [https://mailchi.mp/press.kamalaharris.com/vice-president-harris-lays-out-agenda-to-lower-costs-for-american-families](https://mailchi.mp/press.kamalaharris.com/vice-president-harris-lays-out-agenda-to-lower-costs-for-american-families)
A lot of renters want to be home owners. Harris is at least giving us a glimmer of hope for that.
Highest rent in history throughout her time in office to literally current. Are you saying people are that dumb? How could someone possibly believe this article headline lmao what a joke this sub is. Mods share three wilted lettuce leafs and a kamulah BBC in their heads finding the most unbelievable articles possible.
Well… yeah?
How do Kamala Harris’s proposed policies impact the income of renters?
Yeah she actually has a plan other than export all POC.
Obviously. Anyone up against this convicted felon is better at everything
Just a bologna sandwich would a better candidate on housing
Is it because Trump’s housing policy is “after we engage in ethnic cleansing, there will be a larger housing supply”?
She’s done allot in the last three years as VP so sure.
Corporate home ownership is a significant driver of overpriced housing. It needs to be addressed. Walz mentioned it twice in the debate. Finally it is at least being mentioned. It’s not simply “build more”.
Jared Kushbernis literally a slumlord
I am all for it if she can get the ball rolling on building the 3M units she is promising. Even if she doesn’t hit that number, if she gets elected, there will be an expectation for her to try.
If there are more homes coming to the market, that means prices will eventually go down. If home buyers are expecting that within the next 4 years and they hold off to wait, that means even less buyers on the market which equals to less bidding wars. Less bidding wars = homes staying on the market longer and owners will have to start dropping prices further.
At least that is my train of thought on this and I’m hoping it happens. PLEASE KAMALA. Wreck those property values!
Why do they even ask people these questions?
Like the economy ones (to people that don’t even understand how tax brackets work)…there should be a quiz before you can even take these things.
“Do you know *even one* policy the candidates have?”
Tired of the VIBES takes, this isn’t a knock on Harris, its just meaningless data for the electorate.
Duh
What, you mean ‘free up housing by evicting immigrants’ isn’t a popular policy? I guess there is some sanity left in the American Electorate*
*pending confirmation
She is the better candidate in every way.
True
No shet.
Yea because she actually has ideas and policy goals to help in those areas.
Unlike Trump who has a concept of a plan.
Seriously, it seems like JD during the debate couldnt outline anything they’d do on housing except round of millions of immigrants.
Which would do nothing to combat housing. Those prices don’t suddenly crash afterwards.
These. Fucking. Clowns.
With Investment Firms and Airbnbs. It’s not profitable to let Americans buy homes.
So how do we fix this?
We need housing censuses. Then, set up state or federal marketplaces to fulfil demand to residents of the homes only. Eminent domain and setup development and new towns as needed. Aim for the income brackets where there isnt enough supply. Before doubters shoot this down remember we actively do this with the Healthcare Marketplace providing insurance to people who wouldn’t otherwise have this. Tax for profit residential properties people don’t live in themselves to fund this.
Make real estate about housing people instead of greed, making Americans compete to live. We all pay a tax to landlords who enslave us to this capitalistic housing hell hole. Paying Rent is paying into someone else future and not your own.
If you agree, share this idea far and wide. Share it on Ads for Housing especially. Cutting taxes for the rich is class warfare if they just use it to buy all housing.
They’re correct! Let’s back the BLUE!💙🇺🇸
I don’t know! $25,000 first home buyers credit VS They’re eating people’s dogs is a pretty touch choice. /s
Why is this even a discussion?
Who is better to me as a renter, a normal landlord, or a landlord who is pressing a knife to my chest and threatening to stab me? Hmm. I’ll hold my decision until they debate.
Kamala is a better candidate period.
Well Trump does use his hotels as HUGE money laundering operations and has also had a tremendously awful history with how shit the apartments he put up, were.
So, I’d say it’s a safe bet that 2 live chickens would be an improvement over Trump.
No they don’t lol
