He’s referred to as a representative because Taiwan doesn’t have an embassy in this country and we don’t recognize them. Taiwan only has trade offices in this country and do not have an ambassador in Canada. We officially don’t have a position on China/Taiwan.
Export goes where the money is and the commodity is fungible. What China may reject from Canada has to be made up elsewhere. Say potentially Australia exports to China leaving Canada to backfill where Australia would have exported. This all costs more but does the same thing. It is wrong to say nothing has changed from a few years ago. Domestic crush capacity is a big part of the canola complex. If a regular crop is 21ish MMT the crush takes at least half of that. A leaner year like this one at 18 MMT and the market response is “meh”.
If only we had some centralized government agency to handle diversification of trade in our agriculture products… oh wait…
