The EU is a treasure trove of research already. We have a horde of scientists, established institutes.

The problem lies with regulation. If we insist on keeping laws forced by religious groups that cripple whole fields of innovation, those scientific disciplines will just atrophy. Because no one likes to do useless work.

Notable examples are life sciences, molecular biology was invented here in the EU, yet we de facto banned its most lucrative uses. Now we are at the point where thousands of inventions rot without any use simply because it is illegal to use them for the betterment of agriculture and medicine.

Thus scientists turn to more esoteric fields, which are not particularly useful or interesting but have good press coverage.

What Europe lacks is not shining mega-projects like CERN or ITER but well funded universities and more R&D at compagnies in order to fuel innovation.
