Fun fact: October 1st is only a nominal day to celebrate the independence of our island. The actual independence date is August 16th 1960, however due to its proximity to another bank holiday (Ascension of Holy Mary «δεκαπενταύγουστο») on 15th of the same month, it was decided to set the date of the holiday later.
