California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed Senate Bill 1047, a significant piece of legislation aimed at regulating large artificial intelligence models by requiring safety protocols and accountability measures for developers. Newsom expressed concerns that the bill’s narrow focus on the most expensive AI systems could create a false sense of security while overlooking potentially dangerous smaller models. The veto reflects a broader tension between regulatory efforts and the interests of the tech industry, with critics arguing that the bill could hinder innovation in California’s AI sector. Instead, Newsom announced plans to collaborate with industry experts to establish more flexible guidelines for AI safety.

OpenAI is gonna pay taxes now that they dropped their non-profit status. Can’t hinder them or they might leave.

Yea let’s ban reusable plastic bags but let AI run free until they figure out some future imaginary bill that may or may not pass legislation. This is definitely in the right direction Newsom /s

    4. thank god. For one, this needs to be decided at the national level, not the state. Second, this bill would made the bar that much more difficult to new players to enter the game when it comes to frontier models.
