Data source is from the individual city statistics departments.

Data was compiled in excel and the node placement was done manually on a Ternary diagram. Software for drawing the graphic was Inkscape.

Note the dramatic drop by Vienna and London for 2020 (due to Corona virus restrictions). Also note that Zurich, London and Vienna completed similar shifts towards public transportation, albight Zurich moved much faster than Vienna.

Please view this comparison with some skepticism regarding how exact it is. Many countries an cities have their own method for collecting their modal share. Some will only inquire what mode (walking, biking, transit or car) is used for a typical work commute. Some will evaluate all trip be they education, leisure, shopping, family, work, etc… Some cities will only show the statistics for residents, but not include commuting trips that cross the city border. Some will show the individual trip regardless how long it is, sometimes the person-kilometers are calculated.

This is all quite frustrating for someone who likes to make city comparisons.

An area chart may be a better solution in terms of readability and understanding.
