      It’s such a mind blowingly stupid idea that I don’t blame people for “cancelling” him over it.
      I wouldn’t want to take advice from someone that thought that shit was a good idea.

      A wallpaper app is the kind of thing someone builds while they learn how to code before moving on to other more interesting projects that they ACTUALLY want to publish. He might as well have published his “Hello World” project and charged $50 for it. Yeesh.

      Respect his early work but his reviews lately have been pretty bland to avoid biting the hands that feed. This app feels really tone deaf but I guess he has to try and branch out from YouTube somehow. No way in hell I would spend money on it but I hope those that do find value in it somehow.

      He could get people to consider almost anything because of the reach and credibility he has. He chose a wallpaper app.

      probably cheaper to just subscribe to an AI cloud service and run prompts on their hardware to generate a wallpaper for you

      This is honestly the strangest app for this guy to release. A yearly subscription wallpaper app? Seriously?

      (Potentially) Unpopular Opinion Warning

      I feel like we’re getting to a point where a lot of the old guard YT tech folks are going to see their house of cards start to fall.

      Many of them got their start by simply being in the right place at the right time (read as: being the right age/place in their career) to get in at the YT ground level and having the right amount of money (read as: being in the correct economic demographic, either directly or through parents ) to have high production values videos about expensive products before tech made the videos cheaper and the products got easier (and cheaper) to get. However by being the first in the door they have access to people but that requires you playing their ball game by their rules.

      Lucky for them once the algorithm has blessed you it’s way easier to keep the ball going than to get over that initial hill.

      Unlucky for them though is that at a certain level of fame/power/wealth your ego starts getting in your own way and yo stop noticing the “We spent 10k+ on this thing!” (and for video purposes let’s pretend the average person ever will ever have that kind of disposable income) and “We grill executive of brand $ on their latest products!” (and it’s just the exec giving a marketing speech) stops landing like you want it to until the algorithm smacks you upside the head so strongly you can’t ignore it which by then it’s almost too late.

      As for this situation; wallpaper app isn’t inherently a bad idea. Charging for branded wallpaper also not totally terrible because there will be always be people who want to support the channel.

      But everything from announcement, to launch, to backtrack has been tone deaf 50* over and while I won’t say this is the death of the brand; it could certainly be a first snowflake that starts an avalanche.

      Except the permissions are optional and so is the subscription fee. The app can be used perfectly well without agreeing to either

      For a hot second I started to think, “Well, if the money is supposed to pay royalties to artists who supply the images it’s kind of a reasonable idea . . .”. Then I saw that it’s apparently full of ads(?), there’s one wallpaper that’s (implied to be) just the color orange, and Marques Brownlee himself is saying they allow AI art. Sounds like he got stuck in a room full of yes-men who didn’t want to tell him what a terrible idea this was and/or decided the paycheck had enough zeroes on it to put up with the backlash.

      Who tf is using wallpapers on their phone much less paying for it? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wallpaper that isn’t somebody’s family or one that came with the phone in my entire life

      Known this guy but never subscribed to any of his channels.

      Like… I just looked at it, and I’m confused. So this just basically is a walled garden for certain amount of artists backgrounds?

      I don’t know about you, but this seems to not really be worth it to use, even free. It doesn’t bring any new functionality, and from what little I saw, you can’t even add your own images so it’s not even a good wallpaper manager or anything. You are locked in to what they curate.

      Good luck m8, but no thanks.

      I haven’t really been following this but having a wallpaper app in 2024 is insane.
