      From the article: California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed [Senate Bill 1053](https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240SB1053) banning all plastic bags at grocery stores in the state beginning in 2026.

      In 2014, California passed a ban on plastic shopping bags, but a loophole allowed shoppers to still be able to purchase bags made of thicker plastic for a dime apiece.

      A decade later, the choice will no longer be, “Paper” or “Plastic,” but “I brought my own,” “Paper” or “No, thanks.”

      “Plastic bags create pollution in our environment and break into microplastics that contaminate our drinking water and threaten our health,” said State Director of California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) Jenn Engstrom in a press release from PIRG. “Californians voted to ban plastic grocery bags in our state almost a decade ago, but the law clearly needed a redo. With the Governor’s signature, California has finally banned plastic bags in grocery checkout lanes once and for all.”

      I love dunking on Cali for some of crazy laws they pass. This is common sense, something I’m sure will take a decade or more for the rest of the nation to adopt. Humans need to be better at consuming without absolute destruction.

      My country already adopted this law and guess what, everything works just fine and people adapted without any issues.
      Hope the rest of the world does something similar asap.

      Maine’s ban on single-use plastic bags went into effect on July 1, 2021. The law applies to most retail establishments, including stores, restaurants, farmers’ markets, food trucks, and fairs.

      Meanwhile the Republicans in Michigan managed to get a law on the book saying it’s illegal to make bags illegal. They did that before they lost all power due to a voter initiative that stopped their gerrymandering. We just need big Gretch to change that law. Apparently she’s got bigger fish to fry so far, though.

      Good. If you think plastic waste isn’t a problem, try spending a year picking up trash along a busy roadside. Next step should be a National Bottle Bill that includes water and sports drink bottles.

      Everything you buy at the grocery store is wrapped in plastic, but thank God we can’t put those plastic wrapped groceries in a plastic bag
