They are for the buildings that are being built. We all hate this massive increase of large monotone apartments replacing our buildings.

That is above the entry to “Townsquare” development project in Qui Si Sana. Massive tower being built so lots of trucks going in and out of there. As someone who grew up 100m down the road from here, I can sympathize a lot with them.

Now that they have destroyed the seafront with mega buildings like this, those occupiers are now NIMBYs – not in my back yard. Hypocrites.

They sold their townhouse to developers for shit ton of money, and now they don’t like their neighbor do the same . Basically all guys who fight against overdevelopment are the kids of parents who started it

They screwed the Maltese skyline and maked my country looks like a ghetto.

  7. Wait – were the signs really put up by the Tenants? Are they really this so oblivious to the irony?

  8. As much as this can seem ironic coming from the owners/tenants of those apartments, the cynical take by most people commenting here fails to acknowledge that these people might be justified in some of their arguments.

As a preface I don’t think apartment block = bad as some people suggest; I genuinely think given our density we cannot do without a number of apartment blocks especially in the more central urban parts of Malta (such as Sliema where this photo was taken). However most of us can agree that this can definitely be done more sensitively and with more planning and infrastructure to support the increased density.

New apartments should be built but not without consideration to increasing (public) transport infrastructure, accessible pavements, waste management systems, electricity + water + sewage infra. The residents in this neighbourhood are some of the worst afflicted by power cuts, disastrous waste management, negative impact of (over) tourism, over commercialisation and theft of public space, and an excess of cars on the roads. I do think they are entitled to request more responsible planning from the authorities. When we attack these residents we are aiding and abetting the negative direction that the planning authority and central authorities have taken on urban planning in Malta.

They’re probably taking away their view with an equally town destroying building.
