Escalation is going to happen anyway and it’s almost always a bad move to capitulate

If you had asked me 20-30 years ago how I thought WWIII might start, I might have said something very much like this headline.
EDIT: Just to clarify, in response to replies here: The comment above in no advocates for appeasement. The runup to WWII is very applicable to the world situation today, and appeasing the madman in Russia (in my mind) would virtually guarantee a wider war – he’s already made moves in that direction anyway.
My comment here is to highlight the delicate nature of the current situation; overt involvement may be just as high a risk as appeasement.
> In a media briefing with the Observer in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said it involved carrying out deep strikes with western missiles inside Russia – something London and Washington have so far refused.
> Zelenskyy added: "Biden can strengthen Ukraine and make important decisions for Ukraine to become stronger and to protect its independence while he is US president. I think it is a historical mission after all.”
If Ukraine can already reach far into Russia with Drones, what difference will it be if they are using arms supplied from other countries. Just get on with it already.

The problem with long-range missiles is that NATO troops needs to program their launch, position and target because Ukrainians do not have the knowledge and means to do it. This would mean HUGE escalation as there would actually be direct strikes from NATO to Russia.

Long range missiles will certainly help, but I don’t see how it will be a sort of game changer that will change the tide and win the war for them.
Russian has hit Ukraine with thousands of long range missiles over the past 2+ years and it hasn’t really forced the Ukrainians to give up. Russia is far bigger with more air defense and much of their military facilities are outside of long range missile range as well.

Ukraine is reportedly planning to use US-provided missiles to strike inside Russia as part of its counteroffensive strategy.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/sep/21/biden-letting-ukraine-strike-deep-within-russia-key-to-ending-war-zelenskyy-says) reduced by 89%. (I’m a bot)
