Really who the fuck in Greece is fed up with tourists? never heard that shit in real life. Along with shipping tourism is really important to Greece. We are not suicidal to get fed up with tourists.

    >The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, from the socialist Pasok party, opened the can of worms by admitting that the capital is not making a profit from all that tourism. Speaking to Euronews, he said: “Each visitor only contributes €0.40 to the city’s public accounts, and we haven’t even seen that money.”

Sounds like a corruption issue, or the government is just fucking useless to not tax any tourist services.

Also, does Greece still use cash payments, or have they gotten over that

Let’s just quit this global world. No one can go anywhere ever okay.

I love how everytime anyone tries to address tourism related issues, mfs on reddit tell them to shut up and continue their economy’s over-reliance on tourism which only benefits a small subset of the population. And all this because they don’t want to give up their two weeks in España.

Tourism in Greece is one big scam: very high “tourist tax”, tax to use the highway, “rich tax for Westerners” whenever you try to buy something, … Even the car rental scammed me by suddenly making up an extra 100€ fee when picking up the car.

Very nice country and otherwise loved the country. But constantly getting ripped or having attempts made to rip you off: no thanks. It ain’t vacation anymore when you constantly have to watch out for everybody trying to squeeze every penny out of you.

Actually it ain’t even really about the money – but rather about not being able to have any trust and constantly feeling like you’re getting ripped off because you are getting ripped off.

Greece is fed up with tourism but it’s also literally being fed *by* tourism. Let’s cut the drama and reconsider everyone who’s filling their belly with tourist income. Not so fed up now are we?

Overtourism is a problem. I don’t think anyone’s suggesting ending tourism outright (aside from people out of touch with reality), but it keeps growing to such a degree that it affects the quality of life of residents, as well as the tourists’ own experience. It’s weird that whenever news comes out of people complaining about overtourism you get comments insinuating these people should just shut up and accept their fate, that they are nothing without tourism. Now, I don’t think tourists themselves should be the target of this ire, as they more of a symptom rather than the cause, but I do suppose that in some ways such protests get the government’s attention. In the sense that if tourists increasingly start to feel unwelcome that’ll affect tourism and the government will be forced to do something.

But I’m honestly not sure what the correct approach is. I just think that it is valid to express some frustration towards overtourism.

  8. Its not that people are against tourism. Its that the worlds population is ever increasing, so the number of tourists will just keep going up. I’ve been to Disney land a few times as a kid/teen, and the crowds were never to bad. now, its insane.

$20 says that in the next 10-20 years, there will be a limit on tourists allowed in countries.

I do not understand this. I do understand that visitors are often obnoxious but it’s a source of income, do people hate money?

many places work thier asses off to boost tourism.

Can’t they just stop issuing tourist visas and stop bitching.

A mayor, who isn’t part of the ruling party, complaining about not getting enough government funds from races, while gets more funding than the entire country combined.
