That’s a nice way of saying the US would never allow it, because then the US military would have no reason to be in South Korea to “protect” it.

  3. When you got the US protecting you with their nukes there is no reason to invest in your own.

At 60, I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that there are human beings on this earth who’d have no qualms about pressing a proverbial button and killing millions or even billions of people.

  5. It’s good to hear the South Korean president feels confident without needing their own nukes. Let’s hope for some peace and stability in the region!

  6. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.rfa.org/english/news/korea/south-korea-nuclear-weapons-09202024030701.html) reduced by 82%. (I’m a bot)

    > South Korea has already established a system that can effectively deter and respond to the North Korean nuclear threat without the need for its own nuclear arsenal, said South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, a week after the North unveiled details of its uranium enrichment facility for the first time.

    > The NCG framework was announced during the bilateral summit in Washington last April against the backdrop of growing demands in South Korea for its own nuclear weapons in light of North Korea's escalating nuclear threats.

    > Russian President Vladimir Putin warned South Korea in June that sending weapons to Ukraine would be a "Very big mistake" after South Korea said it would consider doing so in response to a pact between Russia and North Korea to come to each other's aid if attacked.

Well yeah, seems like a really expensive solution to a really cheap problem

  8. It’s no secret that they expect to automatically own nukes after unification, which is part of the reason why NK developed its nuclear program without the strongest opposition from SK.

  9. Unfortunately Russia has infiltrated conservative media and politicians. Their propaganda has rotted their brains to the point I don’t trust conservatives to support protecting any of our allies any longer. Atleast definitely not Trump or any of his supporters.

I would not he surprised if Trump let North Korea take the South. Trump is like the Kremlins ideal candidate. He threatens to pull support for our allies constantly, be it NATO or Ukraine.

  10. Yes, North Korea wants to conquer South Korea… not destroy it in nuclear fire.

And it’s corrolary is that, in any war, once South Korea and the US destroy the government of North Korea and it’s territory reunifies under South Korean control…

… South Korea doesn’t want to govern a country in which half of it’s land is a nuclear hellscape.

Nukes only work if your opponent doesn’t want it’s citizens dead
