TOKYO – The number of people in Japan aged 100 or older has hit a record high of more than 95,000 – almost 90 per cent of them women – government data showed on Sept 17.

The figures further highlight the slow-burning demographic crisis gripping the world’s fourth-biggest economy as its population ages and shrinks.

As of Sept 1, Japan had 95,119 centenarians, up 2,980 year-on-year, with 83,958 of them women and 11,161 men, the health ministry said in a statement.

This is what happens when a government is not actively trying to kill its population

  5. Figures. With the advancement of medical technology plus good diet, people’s life expectancy is getting longer.

Note that Japan is kinda notorious for pension fraud so the real number is probably much lower.

    > A government audit in 2010 uncovered 230,000 supposedly living Japanese centenarians who were dead or missing.

  7. I want to see what happens to a society when people aren’t having kids and people are old and living longer. This will eventually be a issue for all countries.

If anyone can solve it, its Japan.

Wow this is actually an amazing stat thank you, even if it’s fibbed a little or half this amount still crazy. How long until someone hits 150 do you guys think?

It’s funny they used a picture of Sugamo, which is considered the “harajuku for old people”.

Something something I think a lot of men of that generation were killed in their 20s or late teens. Something something wwii

  12. I’m curious – do young workers pay through the nose for pensions for the rapidly aging society? In other words, does the Japanese government eat its young like they do in places like Germany? I can imagine it being even more infuriating in Japan due to the horrible work culture.

Wow, over 95,000 people in Japan are over 100, and most of them are women? That’s some real girl power there! Truly inspiring!

Makes sense, the males in their age group would’ve been fighting age during WWII. According to the National WWII Museum, Japan’s military death toll was 2,120,000
