    ***The Telegraph reports:***

The Kremlin said that it is growing its army to be the second largest in the world as a result of the [threat from the West](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/03/26/russia-war-nato-usa-troops-tanks-missiles-numbers-ukraine/).

Vladimir Putin signed a presidential decree ordering the regular size of the Russian army to be [increased by 180,000](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2022/08/25/vladimir-putin-orders-russian-army-increase-troops-137000/) troops to 1.5 million active servicemen.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies, a military think tank, said the increase would result in Moscow’s armed forces leapfrogging both India and the US to become only second to China in size.

Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Kremlin, said: “This is due to the number of threats that exist to our country along the perimeter of our borders.

“It is caused by the extremely hostile environment on our western borders and instability on our eastern borders. This demands appropriate measures to be taken.”

  2. maybe in terms of number of troops, what with their draft and all.

i would wager that US troops have better equipment and training than those comrades

Russia can’t handle Ukraines Army but they think they can tangle with the US.

    Delusional.

  4. **Place your bets**: ~2Million raggedy-ass convicts, farmers and teenagers using 1970’s technology VS ~2Million trained soldiers with cutting-edge technology.

  5. inquisitor345 on

We shall see how many soldiers they have left after Ukraine has their way with them.

Ukraine already killed and disabled 630k russian soldiers. Keep them coming Pootin.

    Cool

They still stand no chance of winning a conventional war with the US

But good luck with those T-54’s, I guess

    They’re talking quantity, not quality.

It’s embarrassing to read this kinda bullshit after 2022. Size only matters if you know how to use it. Ukraine cuckholding Russia highlights the advantage of motivation as well as western materiel and training. Send more lambs to the slaughter. The abattoir is open 24/7.

  9. Moscow is running an army that can’t even wage a “special military operation” against land they controlled 30 years ago for literally centuries. Putin running an army that suffered more military casualties since the army of Saddam Hussein.

    Bigger isn’t always better.

  10. Yet it keeps getting its ass handed to it by an army that ranks 21st in the world.

How can he just say “I want the second biggest army in the world “ well his soldiers die every day and people assume this is going to happen?” Like he didn’t want this before the war.

Second largest what? Certainly not an army. More of a hodgepodge collection of drunkards, junkies, prisoners and mentally ill. “Hey, look! We have the largest collection of unmotivated, ill equipped, ill fed people that totally lacks discipline and are useless as soldiers!”

  13. leonardosalvatore on

Yep, sure. Ants have one of the biggest army on this planet too!

What kind of joke news is this? Just because the president dictator declares something, it doesn’t equate it to be a thing in the real world.

Why do established press keep treating bad faith actors like they are normal?

    What is this junk???

  15. Russian army is in the bronze age while the US is over there using Photonman and Bigdaddy.

I mean… ok? It’s mostly just meat. Most of their “good” land vehicles and artillery are gone and production is unable to keep up with replacing said losses. The Soviet stockpiles are vast but are dwindling, having to canibalize more and more tanks just to get another old one working. the training is… just not there. The economy is in trouble and getting worse due to sanctions and a shrinking of the workforce. What they have left is their nuclear arsenal and there’s no guarantee how much of their stockpile even still works. Granted, even just 1% is enough to cause a LOT of problems but even they aren’t stupid enough to use them unless they’re being seriously attacked, something far more than the Kursk incursion or any military targets in country Ukraine the West lets them hit. Why? Those at the top aren’t ready to die. The “Russia Stronk, Launch Many Nukes” Flavor-Aid is for the masses, not for them. They know full well that they have no hope of winning a nuclear exchange. All they’d do is guarantee the end of the Russian civilization and the West, though damaged badly, would most likely continue on.

This is a pile of mostly nothing. Take note and continue with plans as normal.

  17. Ahh, I remember in 1991 when one of the largest armies in the world, the mighty Iraqi Army, invaded Kuwait. Largest doesn’t equate to most effective.

pumping up numbers with ill trained 18 year old conscripts who die in first month of the war doesnt really make a army ”good’.

Saddam Hussein also had similar ”largest army in Middle East”. When met with actual competent enemy, that army crumbled in less than 3 months and disappeared into nothing
