Submission Statement: A [survey from the ASEAN Studies Centre at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute](https://www.iseas.edu.sg/centres/asean-studies-centre/state-of-southeast-asia-survey/the-state-of-southeast-asia-2024-survey-report/) found that residents in ASEAN countries narrowly prefer the China over the US if they were forced to choose between the two. The question was phrased as “Which country should ASEAN choose if forced to align with either strategic rival?”
China edged out the US 50.5% vs 49.5%, but notably, the US led 61% to 39% in 2023.
Overall the US led in the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Myanmar, and Cambodia, while China was ahead in Thailand, Brunei, Laos, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
Shifts in public perception are important as America and China compete for influence in southeast Asia.
I think its interesting that the US edges out China in Cambodia despite massive Chinese economic influence there.
The article didn’t make this connection, but I strongly suspect the US stance to the war in Gaza was a major factor in declining US preference in the Muslim-majority countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei.
