well, Trump getting elected would probably be worse for Germany than that bridge collapse.

  2. I don’t care about the bridge. Nobody was hurt and it doesn’t affect my life in any way.

  3. Max-_-Power on

Because Trump threatened to withdraw from NATO or make members that do not make the admittedly agreed-upon 2% budget pay up, licks Putin’s boots, salutes to north korean generals and generally behaves like a toddler throwing a tantrum while having access to nuclear weapons.

Yeah, why would THAT be more interesting than a bridge that collapsed in the middle of the night /s

We already know our infrastructure is crumbling away, but we don’t know yet how badly the US democracy will crumble.

  5. Well, is that bridge story really that interesting on a national level? I would say no. Its neither famous, nor did anyone get hurt (as far as I know). Its probably only important on a regional level, because its going to be annoying and inconvienent for traffic for a long time.

  6. Because a bridge collapsing without any deaths or even injuries hardly matters in the rest of the country. Sadly the same cant be said about the president of the US.
And to be honest most people are interested in it because of the dumpster fire that is Trump. Germans most certainly cared less about US elections prior to him. Obama was a big thing because he was a charismatic guy but I doubt the average German on the street even remembers who he ran against in those two elections.

Because your tomfoolery affects us if we want it or not. A pro-Russian Trump at the helm of the US leads to war in Europe.

  8. Because, let’s face it, the bridge collapsing doesn’t affect anyone outside of Dresden.

  9. i dont know ether. i only care who is winning in the end. i dont get it whats so interesting in the votes. it does not makes sense to me to talk that much about US votes. We can’t change anything.

Trump in his *closing argument* in the debate:

    > “You believe in things that the American people don’t believe in,” he said, addressing Harris. “You believe in things like, we’re not gonna frack. We’re not gonna take fossil fuel. We’re not gonna do — things that are going to make this country strong, whether you like it or not.”

    > “**Germany** tried that and within one year, they were back to building normal energy plants,” he continued. “We’re not ready for it.”

So, Donald Trump brought up Germany in the most important part of the debate for him- his closing statement. He’s saying that Germany was smart to “abandon” strict green energy initiatives and to go back to coal, etc.

  11. Because the President in the US has more impact on Germany than a bloody Bridge in an East German City no one cares about.
I Would guess that in Dresden newspapers the Bridge is nr 1

  12. The outcome of the US presidential election could have far-reaching consequences for the world as a whole, including for Germany. It could affect trade, and therefore the economy; more worryingly, it could affect the course of the war in Ukraine, which is pretty much on our doorstep. And just generally, the idea that the future Commander-in-Chief of one of the world’s most powerful militaries could be somebody who thinks that Haitians steal and eat pet cats and that an acceptable strategy to deal with a pandemic is to inject people with bleach is scary to anyone with half a brain.

The collapse of a bridge with no casualties is newsworthy, but doesn’t have the same kind of consequences. If you live in Dresden it’s a major inconvenience, but otherwise it just underlines the fact that keeping the infrastructure in good repair is very important. The real message of that incident is: If you always complain when they close a road bridge just because they find a microscopic crack in the concrete, maybe now you understand why they do that.

Because the Editors etc knew that the debate would happen and therefore covered it extensively, reserved the slots and received the reports in the early hours of the morning, and the audience expected them to do so. When i woke up this morning i expected the debate to be the first topic in the news. It was simply sceduled to be the bin topic this morning. The collapsong bridge came as a surprise an will therefore take some time to be covered.

  14. Because depending on who wins the election in USA, Germany gains or looses potential Power/Suplies and what not.
A broken Bridge is nothing new here and Dresden is not realy interesting for the majority of Germans.
The last News from Dresden that People remember is the amount of alcohol and drugs on fathersday.

In a City nearby a Bridge colapsed and was taken down, 3 Buissneses burned down in the last few months and nobody realy cares about that . No one was hurt to my knowlege.

The simple answer is that someone decided it would bring more clicks.
Maybe an algorithm, maybe an editor.

  16. Believe it or not but most Germans are more affected by the US elections than a collapsed bridge in freaking dresden

  17. maulwuerfel on

This bridge only affects people in Dresden, the US election affects the whole world.

  18. lohdunlaulamalla on

Because nobody died or got injured. If there were hourly updates on bodies being pulled from the river, the bridge would stand a chance against the presidential debate.
Fortunately, that’s not the case and the potential election of a pro-Russian fascist is the bigger problem.

  19. ILikeXiaolongbao on

The fate of the next 4 years of the world, which will impact global economic and foreign policy in a million ways, or a bridge in a medium sized city falling down with no injuries or deaths.

    Hmm.

  20. Because US president is probably the most powerful person on our planet whether we like it or not

  21. Because Trump getting elected seems to be the bigger thread than some random bridge. Really hope EU strengthens their relationship to be less dependent on the USA.

  22. Just had the exact same thought scrolling Spiegel just now. Its just a shame how our infrastructure has degraded and it seems they are trying to put it very low on the news.

  23. CR_Eatmeat on

Judging the latest regional elections, that part with the bridge might be the Russian part of town, so not really noteworthy for Germans. /s

  24. Because the US president probably has more effect in the daily day lives of Europeans than European politicians

  25. postmodernist1987 on

I also am astonished by this. Yes the outcome of the USA election affect other countries but why so much media reporting on the campaigning? For people who can’t vote, why not just report the outcome?

I am also puzzled by the amount of people who cannot vote who have an opinion on who to vote for.

Most of all, I cannot understand why the selection and campaigning process is in the media for two years before the election.

There are elections in neighbouring Switzerland in October. Does the German media talk about this?

  26. Jiijeebnpsdagj on

I know so much about American politics and much of it was involuntary

  27. Bolshivik90 on

Perhaps more importantly, why is it major news that Taylor Swift has endorsed Harris? I understand it being just “news” and maybe featured further down the page, but one of the top stories? It’s the same in the UK media too. Taylor Swift’s endorsement is top news on BBC.

It’s really not newsworthy. It would be more deserving of top news item if she endorsed Trump. That would genuinely be like “what, really? Taylor Swift?”

That she endorses Harris is more “Yeah, okay. Not surprising. Why is this news?”

  28. rdrunner_74 on

The bridge collapse only affected a few folks, and we know our bridges suck already.

The US debate promised a lot of embarrassing moments so it was worth a watch 😉

  29. Tellerfortune on

Because in an attention economy, horserace politics click better than infrastructure.

  30. Norman_debris on

Why on earth would regional road repairs be more important than the US election?

  31. Bright_Score_9889 on

Because whatever happens in the US election will create ripples that will impact and influence international politics. Who cares about a random bridge? Are the life of millions going to be affected by that? It’s common sense…

  32. Why should people be more interested in a random bridge collapsing than in a debate?

  33. The next president of the US is much more important, then a collapsed Bridge where no people were injured.

  34. Zealousideal-Eye-677 on

Because the probability of American society collapsing ( as in “Trump won” ) has indeed more influence on the future of our planet and the people on it than an already collapsed bridge in Dresden….

  35. Fancy-Description724 on

The biggest issue is that Taylor Swift voting for Harris was a “breaking news” alert in the Tagesschau App. That was stupid.

  36. Because Germany is currently run by an extremely leftist government and the system-loving mainstream media is pushing hard on praising Kamala, while grabbing any straw to defame Trump.
