Did he just throw Kursk under the bus? Was it a goal to retake the lost ground by October 1?

Russia can’t defend it’s own country even Wagner could straight up march on Moscow before they scrambled to get some form of defence together.

They are so arrogant to think no-one will attack them so they don’t prepare accordingly. Absolute shambles

My fear is that Kursk becomes the easiest way for Ukraine to get good news, and they don’t have the numbers to expand it forever and would probably lose the war instantly if it gets overbloated and cut off.

Kursk is irrelevant, they’ll never keep it, mainly cos they don’t want to and given what we’ve seen Russia do to its own towns in historical wars, thinking it’s a bargaining chip is very misguided.

  4. Actually, continuing to focus on the Donbas while containing the Kursk incursion can be a “viable” strategy IF they have no regard for the higher cost it will take to retake Kursk later. We all have seen and know Putin has zero regard for combat losses. The sad part about the situation of where the war stands now is the Russians are making slow albeit costly advances in the Donbas while wreaking destruction to towns and villages in their wake.

Moreover, Ukraine has no realistic ability to directly deal with the main Russian advances given they are significantly outnumbered (per various recent reporting on frontlines). The accounts also indicate the frontline troop rotations have not gone smoothly when they do happen (with some rotations delayed as long as 20 days) and for some units, they have not happened at all (which is not sustainable and quite alarming).

This situation can only be changed by Ukraine and the Allies working together and redoubling efforts and donations, in short, treating the war in Ukraine as the existential threat it is with the necessary effort and resources that calls for. I haven’t seen or read any signs from Ukraine or the Allies that this is happening (can’t know especially if any of it is done behind the scenes or in secret, though more public moves such as increases in recruitment by Ukraine would be more noticeable for example). Ukraine and the Allies agree, Ukraine must prevail in this conflict, we both need to step things up for that to happen.

  5. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/sep/06/ukraine-war-briefing-putin-dismisses-kursk-incursion-and-says-eastern-donbas-region-is-main-war-aim) reduced by 84%. (I’m a bot)

    > Vladimir Putin on Thursday said his main aim in Ukraine after 30 months of fighting was to capture the eastern Donbas area.

    > Putin claimed the Ukrainian offensive in Russia's Kursk region had no effect, and that by bringing "Quite well-prepared units" into Kursk from elsewhere, Ukraine had made Moscow's advance in Donbas quicker.

    > The Institute for the Study of War wrote this week in an assessment on the Kursk offensive: "The wider impacts of the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk Oblast on the war and any envisioned diplomatic solution to the war are not yet clear, and assessments of these impacts are premature." Ukraine's president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said on Thursday that Ukraine was "Maintaining the defined lines" in the Kursk region and one goal was to show Russians "What is more important to him [Putin]: occupation of the territories of Ukraine or the protection of his population", while also strengthening Ukraine's hand for "Fair" negotiations.

While I agree it isn’t totally obvious yet what the strategic significance of the Kursk incursion is, it’s more than a little strange how major outlets like the NYT are just repeating Putin’s claim as though his uttering it makes it true. There’s more than a hint of ‘man being kicked in the dick says it doesn’t hurt when he gets kicked in the dick’ energy here.

What if Ukraine takes over the Kursk nuclear power plant? Will Ukraine just reroute the transmission to Ukraine and put in anti personnel mines like Russia did to Ukraine’s?

  8. Far-Explanation4621 on

Putin also said he wouldn’t invade Ukraine or use conscripts, that the “SMO” would have no negative impacts on Russians, “Kyiv in 3 days,” that Ukrainians would greet the Russian Army with flowers, that the war is going according to plan, etc.

Putin says a lot of things…in fact, whatever he needs to, to survive. But if his gums are flapping, he’s lying.

There is literally no way that Russia can spin it that it’s ‘okay’ or ‘no big deal’ that a portion of their country has been occupied. If Russia had the ability to retake that territory they would have done it already. This is a massive failure on their part and there’s nothing they can say or do to make it appear otherwise.

What we need is Georgia to open a front to reclaim their lost terrritories.

  11. It make sense. In the end Ukraine will be unable to defend Kursk. Russia will sacrifice lives to get back this region.
On Ukraine please I would try to maneuver and attack a new region. Be a pain in the ass.

Since everything he says is a lie, Russians must be very concerned about facing the consequences of war like this

“We are winning, so long as we are able to move the goalposts and red lines” Putin’s inside voice

Originally, we wanted Kiev, but this part of Eastern Donbass is good enough. Please let’s settle this before we run out of money now that Chineese banks are cutting us off.

Except Putin’s objective in Donbas have been moving slower than snail’s pace. At the height of their military campaign, the best they did was take some non-strategic towns in the donbas while sacrificing much of their soldiers. Common misconception is that Russia has enough civilians to draw from its country to support that kind of tactic until they win, the truth is they can’t. Putin cannot do another general draft otherwise he’ll start facing potential coups or resistance from the people in Moscow or Petersburg.

All in all, Russia is losing the long-game while also facing economic problems and chinese banks closing down on them, while Ukraine with their long-range missile in development while also receiving donations and funds from the west, and with the renewed faith from its population after the successful Kurks campaign leading to their willingness to volunteer for the war, Ukraine will absolutely win the long-game.

  16. Now that he said that eastern Donbas is main war aim, I would use everything I can spare from all over the front and carpet bomb day and night the concentrated ruzzian forces in eastern Donbas. Every barell they have should be pointed there and fire until is melted.

When a strongman can’t even defend his own turf. 🙄 Putin isn’t a leader. He’s a playboy. Instead of making Russia strong he squandered its influence and might and reputation trolling western nations and trying to hump life back into the corpse of the Soviet Union. He cheated on Mother Russia with the cold rotting remains of the USSR. Weak. As. Fuck.

  18. behold a president lacking of many shits to give about his citizens

Well, Russia can claim sanctions are ineffective but the Chinese seem to think they are. Apparently many major banks in China are starting to refuse payments in Rubles. The noose seems to be tightening, making it more expensive for Russia to do business.

  20. How can the former super power not fight a two front war when one of the fronts is in its own country? Russia will be the example given for the definition of paper tiger from now on.

  21. Of course it is, that’s where the resources he wants to deprive Ukraine of are.
