    >the issue of ‘unlimited renewals’ is currently being worked on with the Road Safety Authority and will be rolled out once the backlog in driver test waiting lists is resolved.

That backlog will be solved any day now, any day.

  2. Should be forced to take the required driving lessons again before been allow to take the test again, also should double with each fail.

  3. >There have been cases of some drivers failing their test up to 10 times before passing, which is something the government are looking to clamp down on.

Why? Who cares? They still can’t legally drive without an accompanying licensed driver. Failing tests over and over is not evidence that they are driving unaccompanied.

Is there an epidemic of learner drivers causing accidents? The article doesn’t say so.

  4. There’s certainly an argument against people exploiting the system by not even sitting the test. But to punish those trying to pass seems counterproductive.

There’s a just something so inauthentic about Jack Chambers…

Unpopular opinion, if you fail the test multiple times, you shouldn’t be driving.

  7. Seems reasonable if you fail the test 3 times you would be required to go through extra training. Like 3 fails sets you back to do a theory test and takes you off the road until you pass and you have to do the EDT lessons again before you can take the driving test again.

Considering they used to have to fail 1 in 10 or 2 in 10 this is a great way to help someone get on the road

  9. I waited 14 months for my first appointment at Dun Laoghaire from when I applied. I passed the first time, thankfully, but a friend has failed twice now and both times had to wait 8 weeks to retest.

Most of the time I was waiting, my driving instructor (who I kept going back to see once a month to try to keep my skills up) and everyone I knew with a learner permit were encouraging me to just drive on my learner permit and not worry about waiting for my license. Tons of people, they all said, just drive anyways.

Pretty wild when the system is that broken. Pretty frustrating to feel like the only asshole on the road actually following the laws.

I knew someone who was driving for close to ten years on a learners. They didn’t display the plates either. I haven’t asked them in ten years if they ever got their licence….

I think it would be reasonable for someone to have to repeat their lessons if they failed the test 10 times. Either they’re missing something fundamental or they’re taking the piss.

  12. You can’t ban people failing their tests until real alternatives are there.

Banning the maniacs on the motorways should be his only priority at this stage, I have come so close to being a statistic over the last 3 months is crazy. This is just someone trying to make a headline and look like he is doing his job as minister because of the amount of road deaths and the Easter drug/drink driving numbers. Another jellyfish but hopefully when one of his friends or family gets creamed on the M50 he will change his tune

In fairness maybe if you failed 10 times you driving just isn’t for you

  15. It’s annoying how the government loves to target learner drivers so much yet won’t do a thing to try and solve the housing crisis

  16. If you wanna start banning people for failing the driving test multiple times, change the system. Please allow audio and video recording of the actual driving test and hold the testers accountable. I had the same tester twice in a row who found a completely new reason to fail me each time. I filed a complaint with the RSA and they told me that all future tests will be done by a different tester. My friend also had the same tester 4 times, failed her 4 times on some random bullshit until the 5th time when she got a brand new tester and passed without issue.

Some people just don’t test well. I know people who are safe drivers 10+ years. Never an issue. But keep failing because they suffer chronic anxiety and just brain goes out the window in a test environment.

I know people who passed it first time and should not be allowed near the road. Constantly racking up points and just being dangerous.

“The waiting times for tests will be cut to 10 weeks by the middle of this year, according to the Department of Transport, down from their peak of over 30 weeks last August”

Whose taking bets on this one?

  19. thelastedji on

That makes sense. I wouldn’t want anyone on a public road who keeps failing driving tests

  20. Noobeater1 on

Thankfully I don’t have to worry about this anymore, but I’d be a lot more comfortable with this solution if there was decent public transport

  21. DelGurifisu on

If they were able to practice a bit more they might have a better chance of passing. Not everyone has a licensed driver that can accompany them.

  22. PsychologyVirtual564 on

That headline is akin to your parents threatening to turn the car around if you keep fighting with your siblings

  23. Linkin Park were rejected by 17 labels before releasing Hybrid Theory.

This proposed rule is an Insult to the future successes born from failure.

  24. SomeRandomGamer3 on

Good, it took my sister 5 attempts to pass and she is still a shite driver. Regularly stalling, hitting stuff when parking. Some people shouldn’t be on the road. It’s not hard to pass a driving test, once you remember all the stupid mirror looking.

I have a test in Dundalk soon, any advice from former Dundalk testees?

  26. designEngineer91 on

I know the situation is shit right now and it’s mainly down to two things

1: The government wants to tax poor people out of using cars but they don’t want to provide better public transport either. So basically everyone is trying to get a licence as soon as they can. You also can’t import cheaper cars, this is so they can continue to rip off the Irish people.

2: Driving instructors clearly have a different idea of how to pass the drivers test compared to the examiner.
Countless people are confused by the RSA handbooks, instructor and examiners as they all say different things.

My final point nobody in charge wants to actually fix any of this because it benefits the people too much.
