      Navy service members were also attacked in Istanbul around 2014. Plenty of conservative Islamic rhetoric enabled in part due to Erdogan and his erosion of the secular state.
      Lovely place to visit and have never had an issue traveling there three times as a “quiet American” but this sentiment is not uncommon.

      We marines probably didn’t try and deescalate it and likely had a hand in the cause.

      They were attacked because the Turkish group blames the US for the war in Gaza.

      I say screw all radical Muslims.

      That explains the message in the group chat (that I was never deleted from) I got about everyone either getting back to the boat or their hotel rooms by 2200.

      I was on the Wasp and was supposed to be on that deployment until I got out of it for a family situation.

      Was attacked in a bathroom at the airport during my last visit to Istanbul. I’m sure Turkey is a lovely country, but can’t say my personal experience was very favorable. Hope they’re alright.

      After I got out it was always explained to me to not sign anything and take it to trial. It removed the officer and enlisted who are targeting you as an example.
