    ***The Telegraph reports:***

Olaf Scholz is reportedly preparing to slash welfare benefits for some refugees to the bare essentials of “bed, bread, and soap”.

Following the [Islamic State-inspired terror attack](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/08/24/german-police-hunt-for-suspect-who-killed-three-in-festival/) in Solingen last Friday, the German chancellor is said to be preparing new measures to tackle illegal migration.

According to reports from various German media outlets, Mr Scholz will cut all welfare payments for migrants previously registered in other EU countries.

Under EU law refugees must apply for asylum in the first country they enter. However, many migrants continue their journey to Germany and other northern European nations after arriving on the Mediterranean coast.

For the past decade, Berlin has largely ignored the so-called Dublin regulation and allowed migrants to file a second asylum application in Germany.

  2. In Dutch it is Bed, Bad, Brood (bed, bath, bread) which sounds better. Still no luxury.

    In general, yes. But:

I think you got exactly the sticking point here. Many Germans, including politics, do not seem to realize that there is competition. Skilled migrants can choose where they want to work and live. So to attract skilled migration, it is not enough to be a “good” country, you need to be one of the best. Germany is all-in-all a nice country to live in. But when comparing advantages / disadvantages, IMHO there are few reasons to select Germany over other countries. This is also reflected if you compare Germany to other “traditional” immigration countries. In most of those, the skill level of immigrants is higher than the average of natives. In Germany, it is the other way around because mostly those are attracted that have no choice or don’t care because every stable country would be better than their country of origin.

  4. And then they wonder why people radicalize.

This idiocy is costing us dearly: Because the agencies do not differentiate in any way. They’re hostile to everybody – even the people who are skilled and whose skills we desperately need.

Plus, trying to deport young people who haven’t seen their home country since they were toddlers and who just now finished school which allows them to go to college (i.e. they’ve been here for 16+ years) and already have an apprenticeship secured is just plain evil.

I myself am not affected but I’ve seen it happen firsthand plenty of time. Sometimes it gets downright kafkaesk.

I am not understanding those who are upset. This guarantees a roof, food and sanitary conditions. This is a thousand more than what is available in more than half the world and it is free.

So save a little money while still importing people of cultures that will not learn yours but instead force theirs onto your people while the government backs that play. Nice

People that immigrate into a country by going through the proper process have earned their rewards. Anyone coming through illegal means shouldn’t receive anything more than what you would receive in jail.

The sad, never ending result of the unequal distribution of this planet’s resources . The poor and dispossessed will migrate to places of wealth and opportunity, who in turn will defend their privilege. It becomes obscene in the banalities such as this . On a greater scale, it is war .
