    ***The Telegraph reports:***

Iran’s supreme leader has hinted that his country is open to renewed talks with the US on [the Islamic Republic’s vast nuclear programme](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/04/19/inside-iran-nuclear-energy-mountain-israel-middle-east/).

[Ayatollah Ali Khamenei](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/ayatollah-ali-khamenei/) told his government that it was possible to “interact” with the “enemy in certain situations”.

“There is no harm in that, but do not place your hopes in them. Do not trust the enemy,” Khamenei warned, according to a transcript of remarks posted on his website.

It comes after [Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/08/09/iran-president-masoud-pezeshkian-israel-revolutionary-guard/), promised in his election campaign to restart negotiations with the West.

While Mr Khamenei still holds ultimate authority in the country, Mr Pezeshkian is [considered to be less hardline](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/07/06/theres-no-such-thing-as-a-moderate-iranian-president/) than both Mr Khamenei and [late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/obituaries/2024/05/20/ebrahim-raisi-iran-president-helicopter-butcher-tehran/).

Are they finally going to start abiding by their responsibilities as signatories of the NPT?

A day late on the reporting with the events of this morning in the region lol.

This is a master chess move.

They are nearing completion of the nuclear weapon program and looking for an excuse to justify its completion to the world.

What better way than a failed round of talks that they can then blame on the US and Western powers.

  5. There was no good reason for that agreement to end in the first place. Donald Trump just had to find a way to appease his hateful followers.

  6. US will pay a plane ticket to the Iran supreme leader and you know what will happen next…

  7. This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/08/28/iran-opens-the-door-to-resuming-nuclear-talks-with-us/) reduced by 79%. (I’m a bot)

    > Iran's supreme leader has hinted that his country is open to renewed talks with the US on the Islamic Republic's vast nuclear programme.

    > Mr Khamenei's remarks follow comments by Abbas Araghchi, Iran's foreign minister, who said Tehran was willing to reopen "Revisions in some sections" of a previously agreed deal on its nuclear programme, a deal the US pulled out of in 2018 during Donald Trump's presidency.

    > While direct talks have occurred between Iran and the US during Joe Biden's presidency, it is unclear how a new administration might approach the situation following the US election in November.

  8. It’s probably one of the few things that I agree with Trump on, in regards to foreign policy.

Releasing funds to Iran would be a dumb move, and I hope Harris doesn’t go back to it assuming she wins in 2024. I hope Biden doesn’t entertain the idea either.

First of all, their promises mean nothing. You don’t take a promise from an enemy nation seriously, especially a promise that they won’t develop weapons/a deterrent from future attacks (what nukes are used for currently).

Even if they don’t use the funds for nuclear, it frees up other funds for nuclear.

Iran is not going to sit on their hands while Israel threatens their sovereignty, period. Whether you agree with Iran or not, it’s obvious they need a real deterrent to stop the West from committing assassinations, and to threaten Israel with in case they decide to attack Iran directly again.

The US really needs to just get out of these conflicts. We shouldn’t be involved with Palestine nor Israel, and we shouldn’t make any major deal with Iran until relations are better.

So you’re telling me some country that has been trying for decades to make nuclear weapons/power decided to call it off weeks /months before completion to improve relations with a country they morally despise

More than likely they are broke and want to get a billion or two out of Obama jr before he leaves office

  10. They need to make sure nothing flies through that open door and kills the ayatollah

When you realize joining BRICS might not have been the wisest decision…

  12. not_a_throw4w4y on

The youth in Iran are turning away from Islam in huge numbers. The regime can see the writing on the wall and ending sanctions and appearing more moderate might buy them a few more years before the eventual democratic revolution.

  13. GiftFromGlob on

They will talk as long as we keep sending them money to kill our allies.

  14. JohnicusMaximus on

Iran stands to gain democracy and overarching freedom for their people and proxies, they just need to sell the patriarchy and buy into democracy and freedom.

  15. Puzzled_Pain6143 on

I believe They got it already. They just want to get more concessions.

  16. BigFire321 on

Better talk now and get the next installment of lump sum payment before OrangeManBad get back into the office.

  17. lurkering101 on

Just a shakedown operation. “We’ll stop developing nukes in return for payments of $x/month and removal of sanctions.”

  18. DapperMango2621 on

There is no negotiation with Iran nuclear program. They will build the bomb regardless of the negotiation outcome. These negotiation baits are just trying to show people that they can be reason with but in reality they are just buying time and one day you know they have a bomb when news of a nuclear detonation.

This is likely another main reason the current president was touted as a “moderate” and “elected” despite being the guy who forced women to wear hijab even before it was mandatory.

To say nothing of the crackdowns and executions which have only increased since he took the title — not that he has that much power anyway, not like what people think a “president” is. He might as well be vice president or an advisor to the Supreme Leader. Yet our media reports on him like he’s more than he is.

    > Pezeshkian is considered to be less hardline than both Mr Khamenei and late Iranian president Ebrahim Raisi.

Considered by whom? Because the Iranians I’ve heard from so not consider him. “Less hardline than” Khamenei and literal human rights criminal “hangman of Tehran” Raisi is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. This is one of those lines that may be technically correct but continues the impression that he’s a moderate or even a reformer.

All the Western media lapped up the reformist / moderate stuff (which came from his own office and the regime) rather than people with credentials in those camps.

Truly, if I’m wrong, I’d like someone to show me the receipts.

Oh, and look. Now they’re probably going to make a deal to get more money unfrozen while pretending to play ball — none of which will help the medicine shortage, revoked food subsidies, higher gas prices (*in Iran* lol), catastrophic environmental mismanagement, etc. None of it will help the people.

I’m from the U.S. I’m not interested in the disgusting “bomb bomb Iran” attitudes, and I certainly wouldn’t trust the GOP not to do something stupid and damaging.
(And Iranians who think someone like Trump is on their side are extremely misguided—this was the dude who banned all Iranians from entering the U.S. before the Supreme Court stepped in).

But the Democrats also need to get their act together and start actually supporting human rights and the people there instead of paying lip service while thinking Iranian democracy is hopeless, and that they can “manage” a bunch of corrupt extremist dictator-junta types.

I understand the sentiment at the time. Obama didn’t want to be seen as repeating the mistakes of the past, and even some people in Iran held out hope for incremental reform. That’s all gone now. Nobody has any hope left for reform. Moderates were always used as a release valve for societal tension and to be an opposition in name only (it’s slightly more nuanced than that, and some tiny relaxation happened a long time ago, but that hasn’t been the case in years).

    Get with the times.

Tell them to go back to killing girls who don’t wear hijab.
