SS: A new ISEAS survey signals a subtle shift in ASEAN’s stance towards the US-China rivalry. China emerged as the marginally preferred partner, driven by significant favorability gains in Laos (+29.5%) and Malaysia (+20.3%). This trend was seen in Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Thailand. However, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam leaned more towards the US. Experts stress ASEAN’s lack of uniformity; nations balance economic ties with China against security cooperation with the US, reflecting their individual priorities within a complex geopolitical landscape.

I read the report, generally speaking ASEAN countries hate China’s political and military influence in the region but love China’s economic potential. They are really afraid of what China would do in South China Sea, especially Philippines and Vietnam, but the sweet sweet Yuan is too tempting.
