These people have been here for two decades at least. They caused no trouble (I searched online and could not find any news about Ethiopians breaking the law or posing a threat to Maltese society). They work, pay taxes. Malta is overpopulated so anyone living illegally in Malta is being deported – and that is the right thing to do. But deporting someone who is illegally here, have no job and causing trouble is one thing. Deporting someone like in the case of these Ethiopians, well, I don’t know, surely it is another thing.
This is good news. It’s unfortunate that justice came so late as it often does.
The only way to send the message that coming here illegally is a bad idea. Even after 20 years it will bite your back
> “I came to Malta by boat in 2005….. Now we are being treated like criminals.”
That’s because you are. You entered the country illegally, which makes you a criminal. Criminality doesn’t just fade away.
this and overpopulation are unrelated.
This is so cruel. They should have been deported as soon as they arrived. Just shows how inefficient the governments administration is. Most things always take ages to process…
No where in the article is the claim made that these individuals came to Malta illegally. In fact, it clarifies that they ‘legally’ sought refuge and were holders of temporary protection visas while their refugee status was determined. Seeking refuge is not a crime.
As holders of the refugee yellow book these individuals were entitled to stay and work (and pay taxes).
From a personal perspective, it seems harsh and unnecessary to kick someone out after spending most of their life in Malta.
From an economic perspective, it seems likely that this group are economic contributors to malta.
From a procedural point of view, it is disappointing that their cases took so long to be processed. Now they will effectively become displaced people again in their country of origin. However, they were found to have not been refugees and unfortunately they need to return. It sucks a big one for them… but the determination of refugee status is governed at EU level and not simply a Maltese decision.
Lastly, these individuals may well have been valid refugees on arrival and their temporary protection visas were granted on that basis. And now, many years later, the reason for their refugee status is not longer valid (thus the determination that they are no longer refugees).
Again, I think it’s harsh.
cry “overpopulation” …it was a hit from a racist jukebox . now you get racist actions to please the “overpopultion” crowd. you reap what you sow.

Perfect. May other countries start following suit, SOON.
Nothing to do with over population. They are not here legally. Calling them community is wrong .. that simply means too many have entered illegally.
Is there a community of Maltese that have forced themselves into their country illegally?
The story should be that it’s taken so long to deal with the problem. I would not trust TOM to report information either bias .. outside this is a company riddled with corruption as everyone who has worked inside knows and is a news agency that has zero journalistic integrity .. they cannot tell the difference between reporting the news and promoting an agenda.
So learn to harvest information but think independently.
There is no right to come to malta for anyone but Maltese. The fact that the construction lobby has hijacked government and are making billions and to do that they need to import more people .. that may have eroded your rights and the very sense of nationality .. but that should alarm you and not form the basis for you to think like a useful idiot.
And it’s not for you to say that these people should stay .. nationality is collective ownership.. it does not belong to the government either. If a group of people own a cake and want to divide it by 10, but one of them divides it by 100 so he can sell off the other 90 pieces, they would be right to be angry and stick the fork in his eye, take his one slice and throw him out of the window .. but apparently if those 10 people are originally Maltese .. they take the abuse like a bitch.
So learn to think and remember you don’t have the right to say they can stay no more than the mafia that is selling the country away.
If you of course are stupid or hate this country and can’t wait to see it cease to exist, I get that too .. but don’t pretend you are on some righteous crusade.
If there is one type of person who I cannot stand is some needy moron, who is a useful idiot, wants to grand stand as a righteous person to get approval yet has no moral compass or values .. just a needy selfish little bitch trying to get approval .. worse kind of useful idiot.
The mass immigration fatigue is real.
I hope they start doing this in Ireland soon.
Europe is not the USA or Canada.

This is all a show of power and “hey we’re doing something” to distract from several much deeper and darker issues…instead of addressing those, as always we are strict with the weak.
