Please forgive my ignorance…. So what is he ranting about? Why is he so upset?
Seems like something to do with utilities and such..? What did the gov do to upset him?

Despite everyone will always speak in their best interest, he has a very valid point.
It’s not that beer drinking brits in the 80s and 90s was high quality, but it is true that Malta will impose by the short term greed to attract tourists. And in the past years we have new entry level middle class in what used to be poorer countries in Europe that are travelling more than ever. (Malta I include in this category). However. Many of those who come to Malta are budget tourists seeking budget alternatives(even in this sub Reddit). They eat at home, doesn’t spend as munch but they do equally as much as anyone pressure the already pressured infrastructure.

I visited Malta last year, I can definitely see the signs of over-development. Lots of traffic and construction sites going up. Many weird casinos, shady clubs and crypto/gaming bros investment. It was a really weird vibe.

He is right, you can’t keep building more and more hotels and attracting more and more tourists without investing anything at all in infrastructure, it’s insanity. Public transport can’t cope, the sewers can’t cope, the electrical grid can’t cope, the refuse system can’t cope. The island has become overcrowded, dirty and smelly with services that no one can rely on.
These people need to stop being so fucking greedy. I used to work in one of the major hotels, the owner basically owns half the hotels in the country and he’s showing off to me all the “new projects” they are starting. This family already has enough money that none of them have to work for at least 5 generations. Just fucking stop, enough is enough.

I get that answers are rarely simple but for a place like Malta why don’t they just impose a tourist tax, all foreigners landing in Malta pay 100e before leaving the airport. Use the money for infrastructure and to lessen overtourism.

No more hotels, only my hotels!
Seriously, greed is the downfall of the Maltese.

What constitutes a “low quality” tourist”? How can I be a “high quality” tourist?
