Ethnic minorities generally cant speak Russian, it is Bakuvian ethnic Azerbaijanis who speak Russian. It is absurd to claim Russian is lingua franca of Azerbaijan.
Go Lankaran, Yardımlı, Masallı, Calilabad and try to speak russian :d

  2. The most intriguing aspect of this statistic is that, to my knowledge, the primary purpose of establishing the “azərbaycanlı” identity instead of “türk” was to create an inclusive term for all ethnicities residing in Azerbaijan. “Azərbaycalı” literally means a person from Azerbaijan. However, this categorization by the government suggests that ethnic groups like the Lezgins, Talysh etc. are different from “azərbaycanlı,” even though “azərbaycanlı” is supposed to serve as an umbrella identity for all ethnicities.

  3. So you’re telling me 99,6% of Azerbaijan speak Azerbaijani **FLUENTLY**? There are still lots of Russian-speaking people who don’t speak Azerbaijani or speak some sort of “Ruzerbaijani”.

  4. Russian is the biggest minority language in Azerbaijan. This census is a lie (I don’t see data about Russian in particular here, but that’s not the point), as all census data in Azerbaijan and you know this. If you add up the numbers, it should show that right now our population is over 10 mln. It is not.

Azerbaijani has become the lingua franca indeed and Russian is loosing it’s position in the society. But to say that Russian is not the second most spoken language in the country is simply a delusion.

    Edit:

This post should have been titled “number the state statistical committee has come up with”.
