Their proposal’s are better than the current strategy of doing nothing/almost nothing, but I think regardless of whether the government thinks that’s the right call or not that the status quo for 24 Sussex is indefensible. The building is in disrepair and needs to be modernized. Either foot the bill for that, abandon it and invest in a smaller/less expensive property or use the fundraising proposal.

Just as long as the government does something here it’ll be better them doing nothing. Finding funding for 24 Sussex, which in the grand scheme of things is relatively inexpensive for federal coffers ([even the more ambitious proposals like this one](https://beta.ctvnews.ca/content/dam/ctvnews/images/2022/11/18/1_6159951.jpg?cache_timestamp=1668815827884)) shouldn’t be as controversial as they are.

They just need to find a new home for the PM. Given it’s disrepair, given it’s small size, it’s time to find the PM a new home.

    >In the end, those managing the transition of Stephen Harper’s family’s move out of the prime minister’s official residence decided to only clean carpets and furniture on the first floor – **one of which was so covered in cat urine, it was unsalvageable**. (The Harper family included two cats, but wife Laureen also notoriously fostered dozens and dozens of furry felines while living at 24 Sussex.)

[It’s not like Harper cared for this house even when moving out.](https://globalnews.ca/news/3420198/justin-trudeau-rideau-cottage-demands-24-sussex/) I get no PM wants to spend money on 24 Sussex, but having the PMs residence be a deteriorating, cat pee soaked, bat filled manor is something for cartoons, not real life.

  3. Just let that building die. The PM should have a fair sized secured residence able to accommodate the visiting dignitaries with modern security features. It isn’t an ego thing, it’s what the leader of a country needs regardless of the party of the day.

One of the problems they had before abandoning 24 Sussex was it was built long before AC but built with solid walls. In the summer every room needs window AC units and they are a security risk. It’s got asbestos and mold and likely old lead pipes and paint still in the walls and it literally needs millions in repairs. and repair it for what? an old building the PM shouldn’t be living in? The trouble is it would cost millions to demolish and that just can’t happen because it’s a *historical blah blah* thing.

I say get the old PMs to pitch a fundraiser to put a glass dome over the building and we watch it fall apart over the next century. That should satisfy the historical preservation types while the next PMs live in a proper building.

Knock it down and build something better.

Or wait 10 years until anyone that might still care about preserving it is dead.

This thing is becoming a symbol of our general ineptitude on housing, no?

It is a residence with a street name and number that resonates with a lot of people across the country. It might be a residence, with a street name and number, that is identifiable around the globe. It might not be a residence with a street name and number that is not identifiable around the globe.

Rideau cottage can be renovated and become a fantastic and new official residence for the Prime Minsiter of Canada.

The Prime Minsiter of Canada does not require a second residence. Sell Harrington Lake. The Prime Minsiter is elected once per election cycle. The Prime Minsiter does not require two official places to sleep.

What a government needs to do is disband the National Capital Commission. They’re an inept net leech on society. They’re wholefully inadequate, cumbersome and serve no purpose to the public – the entire tax payer base of Canada.

The National Capital Commission holds massive land holdings that benefit few Canadians. There is no value for money with this crown Corp.

Offload museums to the municipal government where the museum is located.

Nobody in Flin Flon should subsidize a visit to the Museum of Nature. Like how many people from Flin Fon travel annually to Ottawa to visit the museum of Nature?

Ottawa is chocked full of subsidized joints that an overwhelming majority of Canadians will never experience. Carve out the controlling controller visitors can pay full fare to review those sites.
